If Henry Cavill was not actually developed in a lab to be the perfect actor to play Superman, you would never know it. He has the requisite chiseled good looks and piercing blue eyes. He has the ability to project an almost ridiculous level of sincerity. He has the pecs, obviously. Pretty much the only thing he does not have is the ability to keep a mustache off his face for lengths of time. Although it took a number of years (and bizarrely forgettable films) for Cavill to break out to audiences in a big way, taking on the role of Clark Kent in Zack Snyder’s 2013 reboot Man of Steel made him a household name. However, according to reports, Warner Bros has a brand new Superman on the way and it does not seem to be Henry Cavill.
Every year, movie theater owners from around the world gather at CinemaCon to get a first look at what studios are going to serve up to them. This year, it is happening at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, and Deadline is reporting that the new trailer for the much-delayed Flash movie features “a young Superman” but nary a mention of Henry Cavill. Given that Cavill’s current status as the official DCEU last son of Krypton has been in doubt since the release of Justice League, it stands to reason that if he was showing up in The Flash, it would be big news. The other big thing about the trailer is a whole lot of Batman business, including the return of Michael Keaton to the character after 30 years. Keaton apparently references one of the single best lines of dialogue in movie history, but we’ll let you wonder about that (it’s about nuts).
Henry Cavill’s most recent appearance as Superman was in the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, which he also filmed reshoots for. Upon the release of the film on HBO Max, Cavill confirmed that he was under contract for one more performance as Superman; at the time, there was discussion of a standalone film starring him as the character, but a lot has happened at Warner Bros between then and now. Currently, Henry Cavill is set to star in the upcoming Matthew Vaughn spy thriller Argylle (along with an enormous cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, John Cena and pop singer Dua Lipa). He is also appearing in the sequel to the Millie Bobbie Brown Netflix film Enola Holmes, in which he plays another iconic character, her older brother Sherlock. He has also been attached to a reboot of the Highlander franchise and has been cast in a film called The Rosie Project.
It would be very odd if Warner Bros did not take advantage of having Henry Cavill on board for one more Superman appearance, so it is possible we will see his version of Superman in The Flash in some capacity. On the other hand, the Ezra Miller-starring movie definitely involves the multiverse concept much in favor in comic book adaptations currently, as evidenced by including both the Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck versions of Batman. It is likely Warner Bros sees this as an opportunity to seamlessly transition Henry Cavill out of the role and replace him with some parallel reality variant that does not have contract re-negotiation baggage. The Flash is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2023.
