Henry Cavill’s James Bond Rip-Off Gets Sexy First Trailer
The first big action-adventure movie of 2024 just got a trailer and it’s bonkers! Henry Cavill sports a hairstyle reminiscent of ’90s era Vanilla Ice in our first glimpse at the upcoming spy satire Argylle. The trailer also features popstar Dua Lipa slaying in a curve-hugging sparkly gold dress, Sam Rockwell in a goofy disguise, and a cat that keeps getting in everyone’s way.
Argylle is the latest offering from Kingsmen director Matthew Vaughn. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks to one-up Vaughn’s other spy franchise when it comes to over-the-top insanity with a plot that looks like one part Stranger Than Fiction, one part James Bond, and a dash of Last Action Hero thrown in for good measure. Add a sprinkle of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, and you have a movie that looks both crazy and crazy good.
Fans of Cavill’s short-lived career as Superman will no doubt enjoy seeing the actor team up with Peacemaker‘s John Cena in the crossover they were denied by DC.
The trailer starts with Henry Cavill and his ridiculous hair living out a James Bond spoof with John Cena in the role of Bond’s longtime guy-in-the-chair Q. What looks like a straightforward spy satire quickly turns meta as it’s revealed that Cavill’s agent Argylle is really just a character in a book written by author Elly Conway—Jurassic World‘s Bryce Dallas Howard—or so it seems.
Conway and her pet cat Alphie are soon drawn into a real-world espionage caper thanks to a chance encounter with real-life spy Aiden—Sam Rockwell doing a variation of the character he played in 2002’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
Judging by the trailer, the movie looks to one-up Vaughn’s other spy franchise when it comes to over-the-top insanity with a plot that looks like one part Stranger Than Fiction, one part James Bond, and a dash of Last Action Hero thrown in for good measure.
The trailer reveals that Elly Conway’s books have been—unbeknownst to her—mimicking real-life events in the spy world. The trailer then puts what’s real and what’s not into question, teasing a real-world version of Henry Cavill’s agent Argylle previously said to only exist as a character in Conway’s books.
With a tagline of “Don’t let the cat out of the bag.” Argylle teases that the cat Howard totes around throughout the trailer may end up being the key to the whole movie.
Argylle’s Star-Studded Lineup
Aside from Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Sam Rockwell, Argylle also stars Sofia Boutella from Universal’s failed 2017 Mummy reboot, as well as Schitt’s Creek alum Catherine O’Hara as Elly Conway’s mother. The star-studded Argylle trailer also features Hollywood veterans Bryan Cranston and Samuel L. Jackson.
Argylle marks the first project for Henry Cavill since his final performance as The Witcher‘s Geralt of Rivia earlier this year. Given the actor’s tumultuous relationship with the DCEU, it’s surprising Cavill would want to jump back into an IP that’s clearly meant to spawn a big-budget franchise. Fans of Cavill’s short-lived career as Superman will no doubt enjoy seeing the actor team up with Peacemaker‘s John Cena in the crossover they were denied by DC.
Argylle is scheduled for a February 2, 2024, theatrical release ahead of an eventual move to the Apple TV+ streaming platform. According to the film’s Wikipedia page, Argylle is intended to be the start of a trilogy of films and from there a larger franchise depending on how well the film does theatrically and on streaming.
