Even though American author Ta-Nehisi Coates has been roped in by Warner Bros. to write a cinematic reboot of Superman’s story for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), every now and then a rumor crops up that Henry Cavill is returning as the caped superhero. But if scooper Umberto Gonzalez is to be believed, then the actor’s association with Warner Bros. has truly reached its end.
In a recent tweet, one Twitter user claimed that Henry Cavill will be seen in the Flash. Then, Gonzalez replied and stressed with some confidence that the star is not going to be a part of the upcoming The Flash film, or in any project as Superman. The Flash is seeing other DCEU stars appear, like Ben Affleck who will be reprising his role as the Dark Knight. While Cavill’s lack of an appearance isn’t much of a shocking revelation, followers of Gonzalez have been quick to point out that his information needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
In response to the tweet about Henry Cavill, many mentioned other such “reveals” made by Gonzalez in the past, which were far from what actually ended up happening. Some of his past revelations include confidently denying the presence of Ben Affleck as Batman in The Flash, swearing that Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League would never be released, and the confirmation that the film would carry no additional footage once its HBO Max debut was confirmed. Given that none of these ended up being true, it is difficult to simply accept Gonzalez’s claims especially when more credible sources have reported that Henry Cavill is indeed set to return to the DCEU.
The most recent report has been from Geekosity Mag’s Mikey Sutton, which stated that Henry Cavill is going to return as the Man of Steel in the Dwayne Johnson starrer Black Adam. Reportedly, Johnson had been adamant about the film seeing his Black Adam going up against Superman, DCEU’s most powerful Superhero. The report also raised the alternate possibility of Cavill appearing at the end of Black Adam to set up Man of Steel 2 and maybe even Black Adam 2. After 2013’s Man of Steel, while Henry Cavill continued to be Superman across several DCEU films, he hasn’t had the opportunity to star in another solo film featuring his character.
As for Henry Cavill’s willingness to continue as Superman in the DCEU, he had clarified back in 2018 that he is not ready to hang up his superhero cape yet. In fact, mere months ago, Giant Freakin Robot had shared its exclusive report revealing that Henry Cavill himself is gunning for a cameo appearance in Black Adam in order to keep fans invested in his iteration of the character and tie the Dwayne Johnson starrer to the Snyderverse. And even though there is a new Superman film in the works and it is set to star a different actor as Clark Kent, with The Flash all ready to usher in the multiverse in the DCEU, it is possible for more than one actor to play Superman in the upcoming films. But until any official announcement is made, chances of Cavill’s presence in the DCEU remain dicey.
