Exclusive: Henry Cavill In Talks For Call Of Duty Movie
Our sources tell us Henry Cavill is in talks to play one of Call of Duty's earliest heroes, Captain John Price, in a film for Amazon Studios if the streamer can secure the rights.
The current lead of Netflix‘s The Witcher may not be completely ending his days as the star of a video game adaptation franchise. Our trusted and proven sources tell us Henry Cavill is in talks to play the British hero Captain John Price in a Call of Duty film. They also tell us Amazon Studios is in the midst of securing the film rights for the popular IP.
Should everything work out as planned, it will be interesting to learn exactly when and where this film will be set. The character Henry Cavill is up for was introduced in the very first Call of Duty game released in 2003, which is set during the events of World War II. However, Captain John Price doesn’t just fight against the Axis Powers.
Starting with 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the franchise created a new version of John Price, active in more contemporary times. Price remains a popular character and as the Modern Warfare sub-series gained steam, he tagged along for the ride. So while Cavill could wind up fighting against Hitler’s forces, he instead might find himself facing more modern foes.
It comes as no surprise that Henry Cavill would be interested in adapting the Call of Duty games. Cavill is an avid gamer who played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt before being cast as Geralt of Rivia, and according to an interview on The Graham Norton Show, he almost lost another iconic role because he was too busy gaming. The Enola Holmes star said he initially ignored Zack Snyder’s call to tell him he had been cast in 2013’s Man of Steel because he was busy playing the MMORPG World of Warcraft.
Not to mention that Cavill suffered some very public career losses recently, both of which saw him disconnected from popular and growing franchises. There continue to be conflicting reports about why it happened, but for now, all we know for certain is that his time as The Witcher‘s Geralt of Rivia will end with the Netflix show’s third season, after which he’ll be replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
One of the early speculations about why he left The Witcher was because of a supposedly confirmed return to the role of Superman, which has since been given a thumbs down by the new DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Henry Cavill is likely looking for some more franchises to attach himself to, and Call of Duty could certainly fit the bill.
Assuming the film will at least in part follow the plot of one of the games, Henry Cavill would potentially be up to return to the role for more Call of Duty sequels. Captain John Price has appeared multiple times in the franchise, including those games set during World War II and those in the Modern Warfare titles.
