Hellboy Is Becoming A Giant Freakin Robot
Fans of the Hellboy franchise have been treated to a number of fascinating variations on the titular demon throughout the comic’s historic decades-old run. Hellboy has been a noir detective, the leader of a band of werewolves and paranormal dogs, and now, even a Giant Freakin Robot. According to a recent write-up in The Hollywood Reporter, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has teamed with Duncan Fegredo for the comic series Giant Robot Hellboy.
Giant Freakin Robot approves of Mike Mignola making the three issue Giant Robot Hellboy limited series.
Giant Robot Hellboy is set to be a three-issue mini series which follows exactly what the title promises, as Hellboy dons a mechanical body perfect for destroying his foes.
Duncan Fegredo previously worked alongside Mignola on such esteemed comic runs as Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, and Hellboy: Darkness Calls. The pair last worked together on a full length effort in 2019, leaving Fegredo to focus mostly on comic book cover art in the years since.
The first issue of Giant Robot Hellboy is set to hit stores in October, with the subsequent issues following soon thereafter. The series will be published through Dark Horse Comics, best known for their publication of such landmark series as Sin City, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and all previous Hellboy outings, as well as a number of Star Wars comic series.
Apparently, Giant Robot Hellboy began as something of an inside joke, after Mike Mignola shared a few doodles of the mock-up design on the internet. Mignola references his love for classic mechs in entertainment history for inspiring the design, such as those used in Pacific Rim and many of the classic Kaiju films such as Godzilla.

After sharing the art with his fans, the mechanized Hellboy received an incredibly strong response from fans, eager to see Mignola’s trademark take of dark fantasy realism brought to life.
According to recent interviews, Mignola had actually envisioned creating a variation of Giant Robot Hellboy for years now but assumed the concept would be too silly for fans to enjoy. Of course, when the doodles got such an uproarious response online, Mignola recognized that he’d have the support to turn the incredible vision into a reality.
While the concept of Hellboy investigating and fighting the nefarious forces of the paranormal from within a giant mech sounds amazing, further plot details are currently being kept under wraps.
A third Hellboy film, starring Jack Kesy, is in devleopment and will be a prequel featuring younger characters in the Appalachian Mountains.
All that is known about the comic series besides the title is that our red-hot hero becomes fused with the giant robot after being kidnapped and brought to a mysterious island, leaving fans excited for the concept of a Hellboy face-off against a mythical Kaiju.
The Hellboy franchise hasn’t received a film adaptation since David Harbour brought the character to life in 2019. Of course, the growing excitement over the upcoming release of Giant Robot Hellboy pales compared to the news of Jack Kesy taking over as a younger Hellboy in a prequel centered around The Crooked Man.
There’s no expected release date for the third film, so the comics are the best place for fans to go.
