Heartwarming Comedy On Max Blends Generational Gaps With Academy Award Winner
Modern discourse regarding generational divides may have you feeling like Baby Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z-ers, and others are at war with one another, especially as members of the respective groups torment each other on TikTok. Still, each generation has their own specific insights and areas of expertise, which could be utilized in a positive way if we could all just get along. One 2015 film, The Intern, is a shining example of this fact, showcasing the benefits of collaboration, along with a few hearty laughs.
A Nancy Meyers Creation
The Intern was written, directed, and produced by Academy Award nominated filmmaker Nancy Meyers, who previously helmed such beloved classics as 1998’s The Parent Trap, 2000’s What Women Want, and 2009’s It’s Complicated. The film, which is currently streaming on Max, offers a pair of incredible leading performances from Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway, along with supporting roles from Rene Russo, JoJo Kushner, Zack Pearlman, Andrew Rannells, and Workaholics co-stars Adam Devine and Anders Holm. De Niro specifically brings his A-game to the production, starring as retired business executive Ben Whittaker.
The Workplace Age Gap
The narrative of The Intern centers on 70-year-old Whittaker as he decides to re-join the workforce after the loss of his wife. Despite his extensive experience in the field of business and marketing, he applies for the role of a senior intern at an e-commerce fashion startup, primarily to pass the time and remain active. While most of the other employees at the company are apprehensive to someone with Whittaker’s skillset, his excellent people skills and advanced knowledge of the industry rapidly help to win over his employers, and he is chosen to serve as an intern for company CEO Jules Ostin.
De Niro As A Father Figure
Over the course of a few weeks, the CEO and the intern grow closer and closer, forming something of a paternal mentorship which assists in bringing the young woman’s true vision to life. By the time The Intern concludes, the film sees Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway take on major contracts, rediscover their respective passions, and even embark upon a covert caper under the threat of arrest. The movie isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely a fun, digestible, 2 hour long adventure that will provide a few laughs and a bit of insight into the modern office space.
A Commercial Success Upon Release
The Intern received mixed to positive reviews upon impact, and currently carries a 59 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. While some critics had reservations about the film, it still managed to perform extremely well at the box office, taking in over $195 million globally against an estimated production budget of only $35 million. The film received a great deal of love from audiences overseas, and has since been remade for Korean, Japanese, and Indian markets with talent and producers local to those respective locales.
