Hayden Christensen will be returning to our screens very soon as Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series. Christensen very briefly donned the suit at the end of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. While we certainly got more of Darth Vader in the original trilogy, David Prowse was in the suit and James Earl Jones was providing the voice. Hayden Christensen spends most of his screen time as the gradually disillusioned Anakin Skywalker. Now it looks like Christensen would be eager to return to the role in his own solo series if given the chance.
During a recent interview with Digital Spy, Hayden Christensen said “If the opportunity presents itself, I would be all for it. I think this is a character that is very complex, and there’s a lot there to further explore.” Depending on how the upcoming series is received, Disney may be interested in granting Christensen his wish. Hayden Christensen initially received a cold reception for his portrayal of the troubled Anakin Skywalker. Star Wars fans can be pretty harsh, but fans have gradually softened to the performance as time has passed and many are excited to see Christensen have the opportunity to return to the Star Wars universe.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will bring us up to speed with Obi-Wan and Darth Vader ten years after their fated battle on Mustafar and the mass execution of the Jedi during Order 66. The last time Hayden Christensen’s Vader saw Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan, he was left to burn in the lava of the Mustafar before he was placed in his Vader suit to keep him alive. Vader will clearly have an ax to grind with his former master. In the show, Obi-Wan will be on Tatooine, keeping an eye on the young Luke Skywalker. He’ll also have to deal with the threat of the Inquisitorius, a group of Jedi hunters that include the Grand Inquisitor and Reva the Third Sister.
It will be interesting to see Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen cross paths again. Many fans believed that Vader and Kenobi hadn’t seen each other in between the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. When they meet in Star Wars: A New Hope, Vader says “When I left you, I was but the learner. Now, I am the master.” This led fans to believe the two hadn’t clashed since, but if you look at Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan’s Force ghost tells Luke, “I also thought he could be turned back to the good side,” and “It couldn’t be done.” This definitely opens up the possibility that the two encountered each other in canon before Star Wars: A New Hope and that Obi-Wan was unable to bring Anakin back from the Dark Side.
If you’re excited to see Hayden Christensen suit up as Vader and face off against Obi-Wan again, you won’t have long to wait. Obi-Wan Kenobi is premiering on Disney+ tomorrow. Time will tell if we get to see Hayden Christensen as Vader in more than just this limited series.
