Harvey Weinstein Is Happy With Movie About His Sexual Abuse
Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein is reportedly happy that She Said, the film about his crimes, flopped at the box office.
In absolute despicable news this week, former producer turned sex offender Harvey Weinstein is apparently elated at the box office flop of She Said. The film stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as two reporters working for The New York Times who expose Weinstein’s sexual exploits that eventually led to his convictions for rape and sexual assault. According to a report by Variety, Harvey Weinstein appears to be reveling in She Said’s box office bombing through a spokesperson by stating, “Details of the investigation, the #MeToo movement, the story of Weinstein and the accusers, has been told over and over again these past five years and it is clear that there was little worth paying to see it here.”
Not speaking to the press directly, Harvey Weinstein seems poised to believe that the box office failures of She Said is somehow a reflection on audiences being tired of his story. For a man that helped launch the careers of Gwyneth Paltrow, Quentin Tarantino, and Kevin Smith, he appears to be loving the fact that his true-crime plot line might not be resonating with moviegoers this awards season. She Said has so far grossed $2.8 million at the box office against a budget of $32 million, making it one of the worst openings this month for a movie well-versed in the film industry.
She Said stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as real The New York Times investigative reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, respectively. The two are tasked with finding out the truth about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual escapades with employees and prospective female actors he attempted to have sex with in his hotel rooms, when many of these people believed they were meeting with him for a standard appointment about a project. The film does an excellent job of detailing many of the women Weinstein chose to target with his sexual advances, with some of them coming away raped and scared for their lives at the hands of the movie mogul.
Harvey Weinstein instigated the 2017 #MeToo era where many film industry executives and actors were investigated for crimes of sexual assault due to their interactions with women from the 1990s through 2017. Weinstein was eventually convicted in New York of one count of third-degree rape and one count of first-degree criminal sexual assault, and he is currently awaiting a second trial in Los Angeles. So far, Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison and, if convicted in Los Angeles, the 70 year-old divorced father of five could see more time behind bars.
Starting in the 1990s when he founded Miramax with his brother Bob, Harvey Weinstein became a much talked-about movie producer, often campaigning his films around awards season to eventually be considered for Academy Award nominations. The Weinsteins scored big honors when their film Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1998, and their string of hit films continued with Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, as well as My Week with Marilyn with Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. The Weinstein brothers eventually broke off to form The Weinstein Company, which fired Harvey in the wake of his sexual assault allegations, and the company ultimately shut down in 2018.
