Harry Potter Series Enlists Succession Duo

It has been nearly 13 years since the last installment of the Harry Potter movie series. Though spin-offs like Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them starring Eddie Redmayne and theme park installments at the Universal Studios lots have kept fans satiated, the original story following the glasses-wearing, lighting-scarred wizard and his two friends has been dearly missed. 

In April of 2023, at Warner Brother’s Max streaming event, it was revealed that the company would embark on a new retelling of J.K Rowling’s series. This time, in an episodic format.

Though it won’t be available to stream until 2026, recent production detail announcements have already stirred up excitement.

Revealed as the new Harry Potter series showrunner and director respectively, Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod were originally commissioned by Max to pitch their vision of the new series in January of this year.

Several other writers were also reached out to, but it seems that the Succession duo came out on top as they were officially announced as part of the creative team in June. The pair have yet to comment on what content we can expect from the new Harry Potter series.

However, With both having Emmys under their belt it’s safe to say that the new Harry Potter series has fallen into experienced and talented hands. Though we will be saying goodbye to the beloved Harry Potter movies of old, it will be exciting to see new content for a new generation under a new lens.

Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will always be the original trio we all know and love, but we look forward to seeing who the torches will be passed to.

We all hope the “magic” of the original adaptation remains. Nevertheless, the opportunity for a new generation of children to grow up alongside the new series and the new actors, like many of us did, should make older fans happy. 

Little else is known about the direct details of the new Harry Potter series but Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced in the company’s Q4 earnings call, that each season of the series would follow one book. With seven books to adapt, the longest sitting at 776 pages, Max anticipates that the show may span over almost a decade, meaning we will have a lot of creative content to expect from Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod. 

In the following months, we should anticipate hearing more from Max about the new Harry Potter series as casting has been said to be in the works. Though there have been many rumors circulating about who is playing what role, Max has not substantiated any of these claims. Until then, we welcome Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod to the creative team and look forward to their work.
