Harry Potter Show Finally Happening?
You would be hard-pressed to find any fan of Harry Potter that wouldn’t want to see the franchise branch out into more properties, especially if it was a new series. Well, Potter fans might just be in luck, as it the head of Warner Bros. Television, Channing Dungey, has stated that there is a lot of interest in a series set in the Wizarding World. According to Dungey, “There is a tremendous amount of ambition for that and we are engaged in a number of different conversations.”
While the entirety of the Harry Potter universe has not been all well-received, as the Fantastic Beasts spinoff series has faltered recently, it would be great to see the universe expanded upon with a new story in the form of a series. Helen Mirren is set to host the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses series, but it will be a competition-based show that pits teams against one another, as they answer some of the toughest trivia questions about the Potter universe, in an attempt to win the converted House Cup. This show was certainly a byproduct of the success of the reunion special that also aired on HBO.
With fans clearly wanting to see more Harry Potter, it would make a ton of sense for a series to be put together that will help to expand the massive amount of lore that exists in the universe. The universe is being expanded upon more in the form of a video game called Hogwarts Legacy, which will be available on February 10, 2023. However, apart from the Fantastic Beasts spinoff movies, there have not been any other pursuits thus far to add more live-action materials.
Warner Bros. is certainly branching out more, as it was also recently revealed that the television division is close to striking a deal with Amazon, which would effectively allow for DC-branded content to be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. This new deal might be the catalyst that sends the media company into a brighter future, as Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has been under a microscope for his incredibly questionable moves lately. Adding a Harry Potter series could also help to bring an even bigger audience to HBO Max and whatever it becomes when it combines with Discovery+ next summer.
While we might not ever see any legacy characters return to the franchise, a new Harry Potter series could entice a few to break that rule. This would certainly be predicated on the period in which the show existed, but if it followed the end of the mainline film series, we could possibly see Harry’s children attending Hogwarts.
Whatever Warner Bros. decides to do, adding any manner of Harry Potter story is likely to go over well, especially if that story could bring back any of the original actors at least one more time. Fans of the franchise have also been longing for more stories told, especially if any are revolved around The Cursed Child. We will have to all wait and see what happens with the franchise moving forward, but at least there have been plenty of positive talks regarding the possibility of a series.
