Harry Potter Reboot Series Coming To HBO Max
There is a Harry Potter series in the works from Warner Bros that would reboot the franchise on television.
Warner Bros. Discovery is in negotiations to produce a television series based on J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter books, according to Variety (via Bloomberg). Unlike the Fantastic Beasts movies, the project would follow the storylines of the original book series, with each season focusing on one book. Despite not being the primary creator or showrunner, J. K. Rowling would still be creatively involved in the series.
Sources close to the situation have reported that talks between Warner Bros. Discovery and J.K. Rowling’s team regarding a Harry Potter television series are still in the early stages. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and HBO CEO Casey Bloys reportedly had to put in a lot of effort to persuade the author to allow the company to produce the new show. As expected, the studio plans to air the show on its streaming service HBO Max, which will soon be merged with Discovery+ and rebranded.
This plan to produce a Harry Potter television series is part of a larger effort by the studio to refresh and expand its well-known properties. This strategy was put in motion several months back when Warner Bros. Discovery announced the takeover of DC Studios by James Gunn and Peter Safran. And just recently, news broke that the studio is looking to reboot the Lord of the Rings movies, which would bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic books back to the screen for the first time in two decades.
Warner Bros. previously adapted all seven of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books into a highly successful film franchise, which began with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001 and ended with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
The eight movies grossed over $7.7 billion worldwide and helped to make the Harry Potter brand an even more significant cultural phenomenon. Although Warner Bros. Discovery has shown interest in bringing the hit Broadway production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the big screen, the studio has yet to move forward with a film adaptation.
Despite the last book and movie being released over a decade ago, the Harry Potter franchise continues to captivate audiences of all ages. The series has a massive fanbase that eagerly consumes new content, such as the spinoff movie series Fantastic Beasts and the successful video game Hogwarts Legacy. The franchise continues to expand with new merchandise, theme park attractions, and a new generation of readers and viewers.
A Harry Potter television series would undoubtedly offer an opportunity to explore the rich and complex world of Hogwarts in greater detail than was possible in the movies. With more time to develop characters and plotlines, the show could potentially bring a new level of depth and nuance to the beloved story. Additionally, the continued popularity of the franchise suggests that there is a strong demand for more content, making a television series a smart move for Warner Bros. Discovery.
While the prospect of a Harry Potter television series is exciting, nothing has been officially confirmed by Warner Bros. Discovery. There is always a possibility that negotiations may fall through or that the project may take several years to materialize. We’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.
