The fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise might be bittersweet for fans. John Williams has seemingly revealed that the project is his final outing as a movie composer. And that Harrison Ford may be following him into retirement. Speaking to The Associated Press, the legendary musician hinted at his plan to bow out after the upcoming movie. “At the moment I’m working on Indiana Jones 5, which Harrison Ford who’s quite a bit younger than I am, I think has announced will be his last film,” said Williams. “So, I thought, if Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
It’s worth noting that Harrison Ford has not made any public statement to this effect. And Williams, who turned 90 in February, also backtracked a little during the interview. “I don’t want to be seen as categorically eliminating any activity,” Williams explained. “I can’t play tennis, but I like to be able to believe that maybe one day I will.” Interestingly, the 79-year-old action star struck a different tone during this year’s Star Wars Celebration. He was even a little emotional while paying tribute to the composer. “I told John on another occasion, that that music follows me everywhere I go and I’m happy about it,” he said via Gamespot.
Meanwhile, fans got their first look at Indiana Jones 5 during the Star Wars Celebration event. While the image showed little more than a glimpse of the whip-wielding archaeologist bathed in yellow light, it was enough to get fans excited for the film. Plot details, including the title, for the Harrison Ford-led movie, remain a mystery for now. But we do know that it will serve as a sequel to 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It is also the first installment not have a story by George Lucas or be directed by Steven Spielberg.
However, Indiana Jones 5 is in the capable hands of director James Mangold who has worked on 2005’s Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma in 2007, 2013’s The Wolverine, and Logan in 2017. He will be working from a script he co-wrote with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. Starring alongside Harrison Ford as the iconic adventurer are Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, and Antonio Banderas. Although these roles remain undisclosed, Mikkelsen is rumored to have been cast as a villain.
Meanwhile, Harrison Ford recently signed on for his first major television role. The legendary actor is set to appear as Dr. Phil Rhodes in Shrinking – a new series for AppleTV+. The 10-episode series is written by Jason Segel, who also executive-produces alongside Bill Lawrence and Emmy Award-winning, writer, and co-executive producer Brett Goldstein. The story follows Jimmy, a grieving therapist who starts telling his clients what he honestly thinks about their problems. This results in massive changes to everyone’s lives, according to Indie Wire.
Starring alongside Harrison Ford and Jason Segel are Jessica Williams as Gaby, Christa Miller as Liz, Michael Urie as Brian, Luke Tennie as Sean, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, and Tilky Jones as Donny. So, even if the Indiana Jones star is hanging up his whip and fedora, his acting career seems to be going strong for the next while.
