Harrison Ford is a national treasure. No matter what he does, he always has the perfect comeback ready to go, almost as if Indiana Jones and Han Solo’s personalities were deeply embedded within his own. Currently, fans are waiting to see him in Indiana Jones 5. This has many questioning if he’s too old for that part. That’s nothing new for the star, who was asked if he was too old when he returned for the role in the fourth movie. When Harrison Ford was interviewed about his age and asked if he was too old to portray Indiana Jones, he had a whole lot to say about his return to play the world’s most dangerous archaeologist, and he wasn’t holding back. He said, “‘Aaaaw, he’s older.’ Well, s—, yes. And by the way? So are you. So…are… you! Take a look in the f—ing mirror!”
Harrison Ford continued, “What’s the big deal? The guy’s 18, 20 years older. So what?” There it is, the question on which hundreds of millions in grosses are riding. So what? “Well, some people might not want to see a beloved action icon reaching AARP eligibility.” He might be right, but can Indy still throw his right cross?
Harrison Ford is never one to mince words and he is right about the fans of the Indiana Jones series being older as well. At the time of the fourth film, he was in his 60s, but today he’s 79 years old. The original film came out in 1981, so when Indiana Jones 5 comes out, it will be well over 40 years since the world was introduced to the unlikely hero that has spanned four decades. If anyone can do it, it’s Harrison Ford.
Everyone assumed that when Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out, the torch would be passed on to Shia LeBeouf, but that never happened. Now it could happen, as even though Harrison Ford is still full of life and quippy comebacks, he is getting up there in age and is likely not to continue chasing action roles well into his 80s, or maybe he will? Either way, with technology now, Indiana Jones could do well to use de-aging technology or a stunt double that takes on the heavy side of the role. They might even go the route of doing a prequel and adding a younger version of Indy. Think of how the film studios have decided to showcase the Uncharted film, which incorporates a much younger version of Nathan Drake.
This writer certainly hopes that Harrison Ford keeps going for as long as he can, if only to hear the hilarious takes he has on the world and Indiana Jones. Ford could take on a more mentor-type role in the future and teach a new and younger Indy to take over, keeping him squarely rooted in the series that is famous because of his quick-witted temperament and his ability to show how cool it is to be educated.
Indiana Jones 5 was originally set for a release in 2022, but was hit by an unfortunate delay. Now, the movie is set to release in June of 2023. Harrison Ford has already injured his shoulder, halting the filming, but the hope is that he can make it through the shooting of this last entry of a franchise he was placed squarely on his shoulders. Whatever happens, Ford will go down as one of the most treasured action stars of all time.
