You know what the Marvel Cinematic Universe needs? Some Shooter McGavin. To be fair, despite how iconic Christopher McDonald’s character was in Happy Gilmore, that is probably a rarely uttered sentence. Not many likely would have guessed that the prolific actor would be joining the MCU, but Deadline is now reporting that the actor is on board to join the Disney+ cast for Secret Invasion, a series where he’ll be co-starring with Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn.
It was 1996 when we first saw Christopher McDonald play Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore. The actor has 214 acting credits on IMDb, but the role has left such an impression that it’s still the first thing many think of when they see him. Earlier this year, the Adam Sandler comedy where McDonald plays the villain celebrated its 25th anniversary.
At the time, Sandler posted a video where he’s golfing and referencing his own character, Happy, from the film. Christopher McDonald replied with his own short video, complete with little marks from his character, like the famous catchphrases and finger gun move. Even after all this time and with so many other roles in his arsenal, Christopher McDonald has a good sense of humor about the iconic character. That sounds like someone who should get along with star Samuel L. Jackson, who has always had a good sense of humor about his many iconic roles.
Marvel declined to comment on the casting when contacted by Deadline, so they aren’t yet interested in telling us who the Happy Gilmore star will be playing Secret Invasion. It’s fair to say that whoever he ends up playing, the character is bound to be another new one Christopher McDonald will be recognized for. Deadline did manage to find out that his character has the potential to crossover into other Disney+ series and movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so this new character is someone we’re going to get to know well.
They also learned that the new character for Christopher McDonald will be new to Marvel in general, meaning that it is unlikely to be a character from the Marvel comics. This character will be unique to the series. Secret Invasion is going to include a lot about the Skrull, so his character being one seems likely enough. The new character for the Happy Gilmore star will be joining the established characters played by Ben Mendelsohn (Skrull Talos) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). The pair met in Captain Marvel and should be well established for Marvel audiences, especially Nick Fury. That could be an intimidating cast to join, but considering how long Christopher McDonald has been working in the industry, he’s likely old hat at coming onto established sets or any other intimidating circumstances by now.
Outside of Happy Gilmore, Christopher McDonald has also been on the recent tv series Hacks, Ballers, The Good Wife, and has had guest appearances on more television shows than most. He often plays comedic roles and doesn’t shy away from playing the villain, so he’d be fun as a Skrull if that’s Disney’s intention for the character.
