Hailee Steinfeld is one of the most incredible young talents in Hollywood today. She has had a number of noteworthy roles over the years, but a new scoop indicates that she could be getting her biggest break yet with a new Marvel series on Disney+. And when you find out what role she will be playing, you might be in for a little bit of a shock. Because it’s a superhero you know and one you might not expect to get replaced.

According to Mikey Sutton over at Geekosity, Hailee Steinfeld is all but set to star alongside Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton in the Hawkeye series planned for the streaming platform Disney+. Steinfeld will be playing Kate Bishop, a young woman who ends up taking on the mantle of Hawkeye in the comic book canon. Bishop and Barton teamed up together in the critically-acclaimed Hawkeye comic series written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by David Aja. It is assumed that the Disney+ series will take a lot of its inspiration from this particular story.

The big reveal about Sutton’s potential scoop is that Hailee Steinfeld will be replacing Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The report from Geekosity says that the two will co-star in the first season, but that the plan is to have Steinfeld fly solo in the second season and possibly in any future Marvel Cinematic Universe feature films. Does this mean that Jeremy Renner will be getting killed off in the Hawkeye series? Or will he simply retire with his family?

Regardless of Jeremy Renner’s future involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, it is exciting to hear that Hailee Steinfeld will be joining the superhero franchise as a major character. Steinfeld has excelled in films like Bumblebee, True Grit, and The Edge of Seventeen. And she also has experience with blockbuster filmmaking with her role in Ender’s Game. In fact, she already has a credit in a Marvel movie but it’s not a Marvel Studios movie. Steinfeld provided the voice for Gwen Stacy in the groundbreaking animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Looks like she will have two Marvel credits to her name once the Hawkeye series gets underway.

Hailee Steinfeld looks to be joining a clear initiative for Disney and Marvel Studios when it comes to giving female characters a spotlight in their Disney+ shows. Along with Hawkeye shifting focus from its male protagonist, the streaming platform will also have Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk premiering on the service. The thought is that these characters are getting a test run with the shows to see how much audiences are interested in seeing them make the transition to feature films.

Honestly, the character of Kate Bishop might actually benefit from having her story told over multiple episodes instead of being crammed into a single movie. Hailee Steinfeld is a great actress and it would be a shame for her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be overshadowed by her character’s mentor. Seeing exactly how they will make the transition from Clint Barton to Kate Bishop as Hawkeye could be one of the best stories we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fact that it will have plenty of time to play out is a good indication that Marvel wants to give the plot the time it deserves.

However, we might be waiting a while to see Hailee Steinfeld as Hawkeye. The current schedule for the Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe shows has Hawkeye debuting some time in late 2021 or 2022. With the coronavirus pandemic still affecting film and television productions, it is possible that Hawkeye will be pushed back to a further date in 2022. The only Marvel Cinematic Universe show with a confirmed release date is WandaVision, which will hit Disney+ on January 15.

Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce that Hailee Steinfeld will be joining Hawkeye, but she has been rumored for the role for a very long time. Geekosity’s scoop seems to be saying that the deal is pretty much done and it’s only a matter of time before Marvel Studios puts the news out themselves. We look forward to seeing her nock some trick arrows at bad guys.
