The First Guilty Gear Crossover Character Is Perfect
Guilty Gear is a fighting game franchise with unique characters and a fun punk-rock, anime style. While other fighting games have had crossovers before, the same can’t be said of Guilty Gear. However, that’s all about to change as the first Guilty Gear crossover since the franchise was first established in 1998 is coming to Guilty Gear Strive, and it’s going to be Lucy from Cyberpunk.
Lucy
While it would make sense that a character from Cyberpunk 2077 would be part of the Guilty Gear crossover, that’s not the case. Lucy is actually from the anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Every year, Arc System Works releases a season pass, which provides around four new or returning characters from previous games.
For example, Season 1 featured Gold Lewis, Jack-O’, Happy Chaos, Baiken, and Testament, while Season 2 had Bridget, Sin Kiske, Bedman?, and Asuka R#.
The last season, Season 3, provided players with the opportunity to play Johnny, Elphelt, A.B.A., and Slayer. All of these characters were made specifically for Guilty Gear, so the idea of a Guilty Gear crossover was one not many fans had seriously considered.
New And Returning Characters
Based on the start of the Season 4 teaser trailer, that didn’t seem to be changing this time. The first character of the season coming sometime in October is Queen Dizzy.
The next character, arriving in early 2025, is Venom. Both were returning characters from previous games.
A brand-new character, Unika, was announced as well. However, after these announcements were made, Guilty Gear Strive announced they were also planning on having a guest character as the last member of the season, and that it would be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Guilty Gear crossover.
The Producer
When IGN asked how long the Guilty Gear crossover has been planned, this is what producer Ken Miyauchi said, “So yeah, we’ve tried to find who will be a good guest character for Guilty Gear Strive… And we’ve been in talks with CD PROJEKT RED, and then there was several conversation going on and that kind of led to the decision to get Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners.”
Guilty Gear Vs. Cyberpunk
While Lucy isn’t much like the other Guilty Gear Strive characters, it could make for an interesting addition. She has some unique fighting skills with her wires that would make her a fairly impressive opponent.
The storylines of Guilty Gear Strive and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners couldn’t be much different from each other either, adding to the intrigue of a Guilty Gear crossover.
Guilty Gear’s franchise is more fantasy and slightly scientific, slightly magical creatures called Gears. However, Cyberpunk is more about a dystopian future and is highly scientific in nature.
Back Stories
The Guilty Gear franchise has a long and complicated backstory, but it mostly focuses on a character known as Sol Badguy, who helped to create gears and even turned himself into one.
To try and make up for his mistakes, Sol decides to fight against the gears. There are many characters and a lot of twisted plotlines, despite it being a fighting game, which is why it’s interesting to see a Guilty Gear crossover.
In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the main character, David, turns into an outlaw, known as edgerunners, to survive. Night City, where he lives, is obsessed with body modifications and technology and is filled to the brim with crime, corruption, and cybernetics.
It’s quite a different story than that in Guilty Gear Strive and it will be interesting to see how the team decides to incorporate Lucy’s backstory in the Guilty Gear crossover.
