Guillermo Del Toro’s Hit Series Being Renewed?
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is a big hit on Netflix, but it isn’t certain yet if it will be coming back for another season. Netflix has yet to renew the anthology series, and it sounds like maybe del Toro will be a bit relieved if it doesn’t. According to Collider, he said “It is a very mysterious process to get the yes or the no. Either way is good news for me because producing eight features in one year was really, really difficult.”
Guillermo del Toro goes on to say that Cabinet of Curiosities was a great experience for him and that he would love to get more people “behind the camera, protected, and cherished.” But, he also said that he has another movie that will start shooting in August, so it would be hard work to fit everything into his schedule.
He admits that, while he would greatly enjoy doing another season of such a unique show, he would also not be mad if Netflix chose not to ask him back to do another one. This might be a bit of a letdown for fans of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, but think of it this way: would the show be as horrifyingly good if its creator were spread too thin?
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is an anthology series, meaning that every episode tells a different, unrelated story. They all have del Toro’s overarching style, but every episode also showcases the talent of different writers and directors, all of whom del Toro collected and curated himself. Del Toro’s goal was to let these other directors and writers feel free to create their own stories in their own way.
The horror series has something for every kind of horror fan, and this is well-proven by statistics. Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities hit number two on the Neilsen streaming chart right out of the gate and saw fans consuming more than 1.1 billion minutes of the gripping, sometimes gory series (it was beaten only by The Watcher, another spine-tingling offering from Netflix).
If Netflix does decide to renew Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, del Toro already has some directors in mind that he would like to bring on for the project. Some of these include Issa Lopez, Jayro Bustamente, and Boots Riley, all of whom he had wanted to include in season one, but couldn’t make it for one reason or another.
In the meantime, though, Guillermo del Toro is basking in the glow of success and critical acclaim from his latest project, Pinocchio, which came to Netflix in early December 2022. This stop-motion musical film is a darker version (though not as dark as Cabinet of Curiosities) of the lighthearted Pinocchio many classic Disney fans know and love, which, it seems, is why it is such a hit.
Guillermo del Toro is in high demand at the moment and will be starting his next project in the summer of 2023. What exactly that is, we don’t yet know, but the Cabinet of Curiosities creator says that audiences will be clued in soon.
So, whether or not Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is renewed for season two, fans of the director will have plenty to watch (and be creeped out by) in the interim.
