The unofficial battle of the Pinocchio has begun. Disney recently released a trailer for its rebooted live-action version of the classic animated film. The film stars Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Jiminy Cricket, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio. Well, now the world has been gifted with the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. As you can imagine, the film has some stylistic choices that might give some children nightmares. Well, it might give us nightmares too. You can see the trailer below:

The trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio opens with the new version of Jiminy Cricket, which has been coined Sebastian J. Cricket and is voiced by the wonderful Ewan McGregor. Already, you can see that Del Toro’s style is embedded deep in the trailer, as Sebastian J. Cricket is frightening. He has the look of an actual bug, and more so of a spider. Also, the film has been made with a unique art style that looks like Tim Burton’s work. The film is completely done with stop motion animation. The trailer also starts with a rather sad story of Geppetto losing his son and then deciding to make a wooden version of that son. That wooden boy is none other than our hero, Pinocchio. From the looks of the trailer, we are in for an emotional journey that takes the classic story and turns it on its head.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio stars Gregory Mann as Pinocchio, David Bradley as Geppetto, Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, Finn Wolfhard as Candlewick, Cate Blanchett as Sprezzatura, Christoph Waltz as Count Volpe, Ron Perlman as Podesta, Tilda Swinton, John Turturro, Burn Gorman, and Tim Blake Nelson. This version of the story boasts its own ensemble cast. Look out, Disney. The film is a dark reimagining of the classic story, written and directed by Mr. Del Toro. However, there is another director that has joined Del Toro for this film. The other director is Mark Gustafson. Gustafson has experience in stop motion animation as he directed episodes of The PJs and Clayman Easter. We are more than excited to see how this one turns out.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio certainly looks fantastic. If anyone has happened to see the old 1990s stop motion animated film, James and the Giant Peach, you will feel right at home. Oddly enough, Disney made that film. We wonder if Guillermo del Toro was approached about making his own version of the classic animated film, or if he told Disney he was going to make it. Either way, it looks great.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is set to debut in select theaters in November and will be debuting on Netflix in December. The good thing is that it will not be in direct competition with the live-action Disney version, as that version is set to debut exclusively on Disney+ on September 8th, 2022. Fans of both Disney and del Toro can go check out both versions of this classic story when they drop later this year.
