Disney+ Day has arrived, and the streaming service is presenting subscribers and potential newcomers with some gorgeous trailers and posters of new shows coming their way in the near future. Marvel is the real showstopper on the day, announcing spin-off shows for every hero from Spider-Man to Guardians of the Galaxy. However, fan-favorite Guardian and Rocket Raccoon’s accomplice Baby Groot is getting his own animated series simply titled I Am Groot.
I Am Groot is an animated short series that will follow monosyllabic hero Baby Groot in his youthful, carefree days of growing up and getting into loads of trouble among the stars. Disney released a teaser poster on Twitter with the pint-sized hero standing next to his own logo of the show, which doesn’t have a set release date as of yet. He is seen waving to his future audience of Disney+ subscribers as his roots go through hoops to wrap around the logo, which gives fans an idea of just how adorable his misadventures will be. Casting for I Am Groot hasn’t been confirmed, and it is unknown if Vin Diesel will reprise his voice-over role for Baby Groot. He is currently filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as the voice of Groot (whatever his age may be now after Avengers: Endgame). However, according to Collider, James Gunn, the director of all the Guardians of the Galaxy films, has been signed onto the series as executive producer.
Groot was introduced in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film as an intimidating yet gentle giant humanoid tree whose only response to everything is the words “I am Groot,” which Rocket translates for the Guardians as he is the only one on the team who can understand his language. Towards the end of the film, he sacrifices himself to save the team and leaves behind a sapling that becomes Baby Groot. In Vol. 2, Baby Groot dances to Star-Lord’s playlist and begins relearning everything his predecessor did in order to prove himself a worthy member of the Guardians.
The last time we saw Groot, he was growing back to full size and going through the motions as an anxious teenager at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 and all through Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In those two films, he was one of many heroes that got snapped out of existence by Thanos and brought back to life thanks to the blip triggered by the Hulk. Although there’s no telling how grown-up Groot will be in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, I Am Groot looks to exist in its own continuity, where Baby Groot can remain a baby forever.
I Am Groot joins other new Marvel series on Disney+, such as She-Hulk, Moon Knight, X-Men ’97, Ms. Marvel, and Spider-Man: Freshman Year. The series will be released as part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Groot will make his next appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder when it hits theaters February 18, 2022.
