Guardians Of The Galaxy Should Move Forward Without James Gunn
Even without James Gunn, there are plenty more stories that one can tell with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
For the last decade, James Gunn has made us feel every emotion possible with his Guardians of the Galaxy saga but it is his most recent and last installment that really pulled on our heartstrings, while giving us hope at the same time. Already destroying the box office, the last Marvel film under Gunn’s directorial vision is off to a great start during its opening week, leaving audiences in floods of tears. While the filmmaker and several members of the cast have been vocal about this being their final time soaring through the cosmos we think that a spin-off feature should absolutely still be in the cards.
The fact of the matter is that following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we know that not only is Gunn finished with his story but that both Zoe Saldaña and Dave Bautista are ready to close that chapter for good. For Saldaña, saying farewell to Gamora is a long time coming, as she was vocal from the jump that she wasn’t into doing a franchise. Meanwhile, Bautista is ready for new projects out of typecasting and also overall sick of sitting in the makeup chair to transform into Drax the Destroyer.
But, hear us out – there are plenty of other stories to be told with what’s left of the cast.
The mid-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 saw Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper) take over as the cosmic crew’s captain with Groot (Vin Diesel) by his side along with Kraglin (Sean Gunn), Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), and one of the Star Kids who was brought to safety by the Guardians when they freed the captives in The High Evolutionary’s (Chukwudi Iwuji) prison. Ready to fight their next opponents, the scene cuts out just as the gang clashes with the enemy.
With this in mind, the idea of the Guardians of the Galaxy coming back in one way or another isn’t just something that we want, it’s something that could totally be in the cards. Led by the feisty Rocket, and with a few new members, there are plenty of varying personalities to fill out the huge hole left in our hearts by Drax, Mantis, Gamora, and Star-Lord.
Speaking of Star-Lord, the very final moment of the post-credits scene teased audiences that this wouldn’t be the last time we’d be seeing the wise-cracking captain. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 saw him stationed on Earth alongside his grandfather, settling in as a citizen grumbling about the neighbors and cutting the grass, the final second of the movie told us that in one way or another, Peter will eventually get sick of his new life and go on another adventure. Whether that means that he hooks back up with the new Guardians or goes it alone, we can expect to see Quill make a return down the line.
There is absolutely no arguing that James Gunn hit the nail on the head with his farewell to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. A film that gave us a backstory on Rocket’s past, and that tied themes of family and moving on in the perfect bow, it’s bound to be one of Marvel’s most beloved productions out of the last several years. While this chapter has closed for a handful of those related to the franchise, we know that there are plenty more stories to be told when it comes to the new lineup of space-traveling heroes.
