Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Is Leaving First Viewers In Tears
The first reactions to Guardians of the Galaxy 3 are praising the film as Marvel's best.
Early reactions for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 are coming in ahead of its May 5th release, and they are largely very positive, with many viewers expressing strong emotional responses to the film and the trilogy. This will be the last ride for at least this version of the Guardians at Marvel Studios, and for writer/director James Gunn, who is leaving both the Guardians and Marvel. As he makes his exit for his new job as co-head of the DCU, Gunn is going out the way he came in at Marvel.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is the culmination of a film series Gunn began almost a decade ago with the first Guardians of the Galaxy, which premiered in 2014. Most of the stars from that film are still with the franchise, including Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and the vocal talents of Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Vin Diesel as Groot. New faces for this installment include Chukwudi Iwuji and Will Poulter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, early word on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 comes from its Hollywood premiere on Thursday, along with several press screenings. There’s enough good word going around for Marvel to be putting out a trailer featuring the buzz, calling the film this summer’s “biggest event.”
Even big-name stars are showing their support for the film, with Arnold Schwarzenegger calling it a “perfect mix of comedy and action.”
Reviews across the board have been very largely positive, earning Guardians of the Galaxy 3 accolades from a number of critics and entertainment news sources, plus an official Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
There is also a massive response to Rocket Racoon’s story in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, with accolades not only for the character’s arc across the three films but for Bradley Cooper’s performance, which one reviewer predicts will make him the first voice actor to receive an Oscar nod for their vocal performance in a role.
And according to Bradley Cooper at the Guardians of the Galaxy 3 purple-carpet premiere, it’s a culmination of a plan he and Gunn discussed from the very beginning.
Many have even called Guardians of the Galaxy 3 one of the greatest superhero or comic book movies ever, and the Guardians films among the best trilogies.
Of course, there is a smattering of voices out there saying the film is not what it should be in one way or another and even saying it heralds the end of Marvel’s creativity.
But the generally overwhelming enthusiasm for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is hard to argue with, and fans are certainly bringing an enormous package of emotional investment to the film that critics can sometimes lack. Some have critiqued the film for leaning on that emotional investment, but all films with fanbases do because they know their audiences. And it seems that the connection between Gunn and his audience is a big part of what makes this film special for so many viewers.
After a disappointing season for Marvel, it’s good to see rave reviews for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, showing that the studio can still turn out heartfelt films that connect with fans and deliver lots of action and comedy as well. We’ll see if this wave of goodwill follows James Gunn over to the DCU and tempers some of the fire he’s been under there. That might be asking more than the DC audience can muster right now, but for the moment, Gunn can enjoy what is probably his greatest success so far.
