New Netflix Anime Spins Classic Fairy Tales Like You’ve Never Seen Them Before
An anime twist on classic Grimm’s fairy tales is coming to Netflix in April of 2024, called Grimm Variations. The anime consists of at least six stand-alone popular stories, as told by the Grimm brothers’ younger sister, Charlotte. Many big players are involved in the development of this anime, including CLAMP and Wit Studio.
These aren’t your usual fairy tales.
Despite being announced over three years ago, the Grimm Variations trailer didn’t drop until late March. The two-minute video offeres a little more information on how the anime’s storylines will offer interesting twists on the popular tales while keeping the main theme the same. For example, from what we see on the series’ version of “Cinderella,” the story has a bloodier ending than the one we’re used to.
Grimm Variations was first announced in February 2020 by Netflix. Thankfully, the wait is almost over, as the show is set to release on April 17.
These aren’t your usual fairy tales. They have peculiar twists and plots that make them stand out from the traditional fables, while still encompassing the overarching theme. However, while Grimm Variations features different stories than you’re used to hearing, the show hasn’t made the tales any lighter.
According to Netflix’s description of the anthology, the stories come about after the Grimm brothers’ sister Charlotte questions whether or not the characters in the stories they tell her “really lived happily ever after.”

The entirety of Grimm Variations features the same writer, Michiko Yokote (Ranma 1/2, Princess Tutu), and producer, George Wada under Wit Studio (Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga). Six manga artists and groups also came together to create character designs and teaser visuals, such as the all-female group CLAMP (Card Captor Sakura, Code Geass), who directed 20 character animations for the show. However, every episode has a different director.
Though only six episodes are listed for the show, MAL does offer information on two additional directors, Yuutarou Kubo, and Satomi Maiya, for the prologue and epilogue. This means that there could potentially be a total of eight.
