Green Lanterns Series Makes Switch And DC Fans Should Be Thrilled

Green Lantern’s light will now be shining on HBO, as it was officially announced that Lanterns is moving from Max to HBO and has a series order. This is part of a new strategy to have scripted shows on HBO’s linear network to give them more prestige and draw. Of course, Max subscribers won’t be left out in the cold, as the shows will still air on the streaming service after their linear channel debut.

Lanterns Is Getting The Respect It Deserves

This is good news for fans of the Green Lanterns, as it seemingly means that HBO and Warner Bros Discovery are putting some respect on the Corps’ names. Lanterns is an increasingly intriguing project the more we hear about it, and now it seems that Warner Bros Discovery and HBO have quite a bit of faith in the project. The series has a solid team working on it with Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, but we’ll have to see if it can do these fan-favorite heroes justice.

Twice The Green Lanterns

One of the most promising things about Lanterns is that it’s giving us not just one but two of the most popular Green Lanterns by having both John Stewart and Hal Jordan co-lead the show.

Although Hal Jordan was Earth’s Green Lantern before John Stewart was chosen by a ring, Stewart became a more well-known character after Phil Lamarr voiced him in the Justice League animated series. Having both characters gives us space buddy-cop vibes while also ensuring one of the most popular Lanterns gets the live-action spotlight for the first time.

Anything To Forget The Reynolds Movie

Fans of any and all of the Green Lanterns have been slighted in the live-action film and TV realm for years now, as the character was completely neglected in the now-defunct DCEU and everyone would rather forget about the Ryan Reynolds movie from 2011 (including Reynolds himself.) Lanterns is a promising project and its description makes it seem like it’ll be unique enough to stand out from other superhero projects. The series will follow Stewart and Jordan as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

A Superhero Mystery Show

Not only does Lanterns have a unique setting and two Green Lanterns, but it also honestly sounds like the superhero version of True Detective, and that could be extremely cool if done right. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-CEOs and co-chairman of DC Studios, have also stated the Lanterns series would be a foundational part of the DCU. So, while the DCEU completely ignored the Green Lanterns altogether, it seems the DCU is making sure they’re integrated from the very start.

The First DCU Lantern

This is also evidenced by the fact that the first DCU movie, Superman, will feature the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion. That’s an absolutely perfect bit of casting, so here’s hoping that the casting choices for John Stewart and Hal Jordan are just as good. All in all, it seems like the DCU is going to be a new day for fans of the Green Lanterns, and this new HBO announcement just continues to prove it.
