By TeeJay Small | Published

If you’re a certifiable film buff, you’ve definitely seen your fair share of Brian De Palma films, even if you don’t recognize the industry legend by his name alone. The filmmaker has dozens of classic outings in his catalog, including Carrie, Scarface, The Untouchables, and the first entry into the long-running Mission: Impossible franchise starring Tom Cruise. Now, 84-year-old Brian De Palma has confirmed that he has just one more film in the tank before he decides to hang up his lenses for good and retire, leaving fans everywhere with a sense of bittersweet enjoyment.

One Last Hurrah

In his interview with Vulture, Brian De Palma specifically stated “I have one other film I’m planning to make. And we’re in the process of trying to cast it,” before continuing “I can’t tell you what it is, until it happens. Then I’ll be very happy to announce it.” Obviously details for the project are still in flux and are completely under wraps to the general public, though the announcement may help to spark some interest from A-list talent across the Hollywood sphere.

Domino

At the time of this writing, Brian De Palma’s last directorial effort was 2019’s Domino, starring Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. While some audiences enjoyed Domino, professional critics were quite harsh on the film, prompting De Palma to reveal that even he was not happy with the final cut of the movie, citing significant production issues for butchering his vision.

This revelation, along with the fact that the film premiered direct to video in the United States, was quite a shock for fans of Brian De Palma’s earlier work, as it seemed to signal a real downturn in his creative passion and Hollywood influence.

Two More Planned, Including A Harvey Weinstein Story

Currently, Brian De Palma has two upcoming features listed on his IMDb, titled Catch and Kill and Sweet Vengeance, respectively. The former is described as a horror film set in Hollywood, based loosely on the true story of Harvey Weinstein and his numerous assaults on actresses and other industry insiders.

Sweet Vengeance, on the other hand, was conceptualized as a Spanish language film inspired by a pair of real-life murders, though neither project has an attached cast or scheduled release date.

Reworking Into The Final Film?

According to the rumor mill, both Catch and Kill and Sweet Vengeance are unlikely to move forward, as Brian De Palma has failed to secure insurance securities for either production. For now, it’s unclear whether De Palma intends to rework either of these projects as his final film, or if he’s currently got something brand new to unveil, but fans of the filmmaker will surely be excited to learn more either way.

Not The Only Famous Director Working On Final Film

Brian De Palma is not alone in his decision to step down with a concise filmography, as other auteur filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino have echoed similar sentiments. Depending on how things shake out in the coming years, audiences may be treated to a double feature of final projects from De Palma and Tarantino respectively, as the two influential movie makers plot to leave the industry on a high note.

Even if Brian De Palma fails to deliver a final film on the same level as some of his career highs, like Scarface or Dressed To Kill, his legacy is completely undeniable.
