A Great Ryan Reynolds Movie Is Climbing The Streaming Charts
The Ryan Reynolds hit movie, Free Guy, is currently in the top 10 on HBO Max.
Ryan Reynolds has been on a tear for the past few years, releasing highly enjoyable movie after movie. Well, let’s be honest, there aren’t many Reynolds-led movies that can be deemed as anything but enjoyable. Still, one of the best recent features is climbing the streaming charts, and that great movie is 2021’s, Free Guy.
Free Guy is currently sitting in the top 10 on HBO Max, and deservedly so. The movie was a hit among audiences, as it pulled in a respectable $331.5 million in worldwide box office numbers, even while the world was still dealing with the pandemic mostly taking away the movie-going experience. The Ryan Reynolds-led feature was also a hit among critics, as it holds a “certified fresh” 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even better 94% audience rating.
Free Guy follows a Guy (Ryan Reynolds) who is an NPC (non-playable character) in a video game called Free City. Guy loves his life, though he is unaware that he is in a video game, that is before he meets a player named Millie that causes him to start to divert from his normal game programming. Millie is a real-life developer that wants to prove that Soonami Studio stole her and her partner’s development code for Life Itself and has buried it within Free City.
A robber in the bank that Guy works at drops his glasses when he is killed, which is the determining tool that separates players from NPCS. Guy finds them and sees the video game for what it really is. Guy then becomes self-aware, as the code for Life Itself is starting to affect him in ways that Soonami Studio didn’t think were possible, and he begins to actively attempt to find Millie in the game.
The CEO of Zoonami Studio is named Antwan Hovachelik, portrayed by Taika Waititi, and he does everything he can to ensure that the code for Life Itself is not discovered by the public. The movie covers a light-hearted tone that also has some deeply emotional moments that help to keep Free Guy staying entertaining through to the end. Without ruining the rest of the film, everyone can go see this fantastic Ryan Reynolds adventure on HBO Max right now.
Free Guy is just the right kind of ridiculous and resulted in one of the most enjoyable movies that have come out in the past five years. The game is revolved around a video game, and it follows the tropes of video games and the hero’s journey quite well. One of the best parts is seeing Ryan Reynolds take on the role of a buffed-out and completely stupid version of his character, Dude.
We won’t get into the details about what Dude does, but it is hilarious beyond all measure, and Ryan Reynolds looks amazing in the costume for the character. Free Guy truly blends the best of RPG video games and the charm of Ryan Reynolds into a movie that is worth a watch for anyone. Reynolds is joined by Jodie Comer, Taika Waititi, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, Channing Tatum, and many more.
Free Guy was directed by Shawn Levy, who has now hooked up with Ryan Reynolds on three movies. The first of their pairing is Free Guy, which was followed by The Adam Project on Netflix, and they are also reuniting once again for the upcoming Deadpool 3 sequel. Levy and Reynolds are a fantastic pair, and the previously released movies of Free Guy and The Adam Project prove that they should continue to work with one another for the foreseeable future.
Free Guy is currently streaming on HBO Max right now and is tearing up the charts, which is not a surprise at all. For anyone who happened to pass over this Ryan Reynolds movie, as you may have thought it wouldn’t be the right kind of watch for you, we promise that the movie is going to be entertaining. Even if you happen to not play video games, Free Guy does a wonderful job of explaining game mechanics to a crowd that could have just been there to see Ryan Reynolds be his normal self in a movie, so give this one a watch.
