Grant Gustin Joining James Gunn DCU? Director Drops Definite Hint For Fans
With the upcoming DCU reboot just around the corner, we’re left wondering if there will be future iterations of the Flash any time soon. DC co-chairman and co-CEO James Gunn confirmed his desire to explore the possibility, but at this point in time, we’re just talking about possible directions the franchise can take while it’s still in active development. Among the many conversations about what the future has in store for us, Gunn has gone on record stating that he’s excited about the prospect of working with Grant Gustin, who wrapped up his own nine-season run of The Flash on The CW.
The Arrowverse
Fans of The Flash are beyond excited about the possibility of Grant Gustin joining James Gunn’s DCU because he’s already proven the concept. The Flash series came to be after Gustin appeared in two episodes of Arrow and stole the show. His performance in the backdoor pilot, so common in genre television, was so magnetic that fans could not wait to explore the life and times of the Crimson Comet with more depth and scope.
Grant Gustin Gets Around
Inside of the Arrowverse franchise, Grant Gustin’s Flash has appeared in Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. He also reprised the role in an episode of Titans, which falls outside of the Arrowverse but occupies similar territory. Speaking about Gustin’s possible involvement with the DCU, James Gunn told fans that he’d love to work with Gustin at some point, but at what capacity remains unclear.
James Gunn And DC
In a recent Threads post, James Gunn assured fans that Grant Gustin isn’t wasting talent outside of his tenure with DC but also acknowledged that he’s quite busy working on other projects. Since there hasn’t been an official announcement about any Flash-related projects, we’ll probably have to wait for updates in regard to Gustin’s availability, as he is currently getting ready to do a run of Broadway performances. In just a couple of weeks, Gustin can be seen performing as Jacob Jankowski, the lead role in a musical entitled Water for Elephants.
Gustin Would Return
Grant Gustin has also expressed interest in reprising the role of the Flash, but nothing has been set in stone as of this writing. James Gunn’s DCU reboot will kick off with the Creature Commandos series later this year, and the franchise will kick off on the cinematic front in 2025 with Superman: Legacy. But it’s worth noting that four other DCU film titles are currently in active development, so there may be plenty of opportunities for a cameo if it makes sense to fold the Flash into the narrative.
Ezra Miller Is Out
As we all know, the DCEU timeline was reset with The Flash this past summer. Given the film’s poor reception, which was exacerbated by the controversies surrounding its lead actor, Ezra Miller, it’s safe to say that Miller will not be returning to work under James Gunn’s new initiative. Given the mutual respect that James Gunn and Grant Gustin clearly have for each other, it’s safe to say that Gustin is the right guy for the job.
We Want More Of Grant Gustin’s Flash
Today, we’re simply speculating that Grant Gustin will work under the direction of James Gunn sometime in the future. But it’s still too soon to know what kind of plans are currently in store for the Flash, if any. Now that it has been spoken into existence, it’s hopefully only a matter of time before more updates on the matter present themselves.
