There are many exciting new Star Wars shows coming to Disney+ soon. Is a Grand Admiral Thrawn story soon to be added to the mix? While he is an exciting villain in the Star Wars universe, many may not yet be familiar with Thrawn. The character has only been seen in novels and the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Everything changed recently for the character when his name was mentioned in an episode of The Mandalorian. Nine months ago we told you exclusively that Disney was working on bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn into the Disney+ universe, and now we’re starting to get more confirmation that it’s true.
The YouTubers at Kessel Run Transmissions did a recent livestream where they talked about many new possibilities at Disney and Lucasfilm. They’ve been known for reporting regularly with Star Wars updates. At the end of a 40 minute stream, they simply said, “Make sure that you guys subscribe to Disney+ for that Ezra and Thrawn series coming out very soon.” Ezra being Ezra Bridger, the protagonist in Rebels.
The YouTubers shared a lot more Star Wars information during the stream, but nothing about a show starring Grand Admiral Thrawn and Ezra Bridger. Would the show be another new live-action series for Disney+ to add to their schedule or something animated? Currently, Disney+ has a live-action series planned for Ahsoka Tano. It is believed that we’ll be seeing Thrawn appear in that series. Rumors have said we can expect Lars Mikkelsen to be playing the character. Mikkelsen is more widely known to European audiences but has also been seen in The Killing and Sherlock. Mena Massoud is said to be starring as Ezra Bridger. Audiences have seen him previously star in Aladdin.
Star Wars fans would have first met Grand Admiral Thrawn in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. He eventually published the Thrawn trilogy, which took place after the events in Return of the Jedi. In 2014, there was a rebranding of the universe and these novels were no longer considered canon. That would have seemed to be the end of Grand Admiral Thrawn altogether, but then he appeared in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. Zahn then published new novels starring the character, bringing him back into the accepted Star Wars canon.
Things got a lot more exciting for Grand Admiral Thrawn in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. In the episode “The Jedi“, we spend time with Jedi Ahsoka Tano. The last time audiences had seen Tano was in Star Wars Rebels, when she took off on a mission to find Ezra Bridger. In The Mandalorian, Tano wins a fight against Elsbeth and then asks where Grand Admiral Thrawn is. This likely confused audiences unfamiliar with the novels or the Rebels series, but thrilled fans who hadn’t heard that name mentioned in a while.
At this point, it seems likely that something is definitely happening with Grand Admiral Thrawn. It would be surprising if more mention of Thrawn doesn’t happen in the Ahsoka Tano series. However, should we expect to see Thrawn and Bridger get their own series soon? We’ll need to wait for more details to know what to expect.
