Good Omens Final Season Suspends Production, Getting Cancelled?

By Christopher Isaac | Published

Back in July, the entertainment world was stunned when sexual assault allegations came out against beloved author Neil Gaiman. The stories date back as far as 2003 and come from numerous women, which has resulted in a number of adaptations based on Gaiman’s work being paused. This now includes what was intended to be the final season of Good Omens, which now looks in danger of being cancelled.

The Allegations Haven’t Gone Away

In addition to co-authoring the 1990 novel alongside influential fantasy author Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman also serves as the show’s showrunner. When the allegations first came out over midsummer, they did not appear to be giving Gaiman’s collaborators much pause; however, as they have picked up traction in the media, projects associated with the author are coming to a halt. Good Omens had already been renewed for a third season, but depending on how things now play out with Gaiman, the show could be cancelled altogether.

An Investigation Is Underway

For Gaiman’s part, he denies the allegations. He says all of his interactions with the women in question were fully consensual. However, many fans are dubious, citing the power dynamics involved in the situation.

Gaiman is a very famous author, and one of the women accusing him claims she was only 18 at the time. Given the allegations, many were surprised that projects like Good Omens initially seemed to be planned to move forward, but the current investigation will likely determine if the show is now cancelled.

Another Project Halted

Good Omens is not the only project of Gaiman’s that is now in jeopardy of being cancelled. One of his other stories, The Graveyard Book, had been planned to be adapted into a movie directed by Marc Forster. However, production on that project was also halted, with the announcement coming last week that Disney was pausing work on the film.

The Most Recent Accusation

The most recent allegation against Neil Gaiman comes from a 2022 encounter with a 23-year-old woman named Scarlett. According to her version of events, Gaiman had asked her to come to his New Zealand home to watch his young child for a while. During her time there, she says she was taking a bath when Gaiman disrobed and joined her in the bath against her wishes and initiated unwanted advances.

If the investigations can substantiate that this is true, it seems a given that projects like The Graveyard Book and Good Omens will indeed be cancelled.

A Very British Satire

Good Omens streams on Amazon and stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant as, respectively, an angel and a demon. The third and final season was preparing to begin shooting soon in Scotland when Amazon made it clear that production was ceasing for the time being. Amazon has elected not to comment any further on the situation, so it is unclear if Good Omens being cancelled is the most likely outcome or if they would find a way to continue without Gaiman’s involvement if the allegations were true.

No One Knows How This Will End

Unfortunately, further details are still scarce at this time. It will likely be quite some time before the investigation into the matter is concluded and anything can be determined beyond Gaiman’s word versus the word of his accusers. However, the fate of Gaiman’s projects will be a pretty clear indicator of how his collaborators feel. So fans are keeping an eye on whether The Graveyard Book and Good Omens are announced as cancelled.
