Golden Girls Reboot Rumors Prove It’s An Awful Idea
There have been rumors flying on social media that there is a Golden Girls reboot in the works, but luckily, those rumors have been put to rest. While fans of the show are clamoring for anything new related to the Girls, there’s no replacing Bea Arthur (Dorothy), Estelle Getty (Sofia), Betty White (Rose Nylon), and Rue McClanahan (Blanch), and to try would be a mistake. Even if we wish there were more episodes to watch, the chemistry between the original cast is irreplaceable.
Golden Girls Reboot Rumors Squashed
The rumored Golden Girls reboot was fueled by a post from an account known for creating false hopes of sequels and reboots of beloved franchises. Unfortunately, some fans bought into the hype, spreading the dubious post around and propping up the rumor. The fake Golden Girls reboot was an attempt to drive traffic to the account and give them more of a profile to launch their spurious claims to a broader audience.
Rumored To Cast SNL Alumni
The cast of the fake Golden Girls reboot was claimed to be Lisa Kudrow as Rose, Tina Fey as Dorothy, Amy Poehler as Sophia, and Maya Rudolf as Blanch, stirring up a loyal SNL fanbase along with fans of the real show. While this combination of actors sounds great, they don’t have the same rapport as the magical original cast so it’s not likely the series would work even if it was real. Although the supposed cast of the Golden Girls reboot has debunked this rumor, the post is possibly one of the best jokes about the series.
The Golden Girls Reboot Already Exists
Perhaps one of the best reasons we don’t need a Golden Girls reboot is because there already is one, in the form of Hot in Cleveland, a sitcom that ran from 2010 to 2015. While it’s not an official reboot, the series is about three middle-aged women who decide to stay in Cleveland after getting stranded there accidentally because of a storm and realizing they can be considered “hot” by Cleveland standards.
The older cast member, Elka Ostrovsky, is played by the late, great, Betty White, and she is a firecracker of an older lady and the caretaker of the home that Melanie Moretti (Valerie Bertinelli), Joy Scroggs (Jen Leeves), and Victoria Chase (Wendie Malick) move into. Does any of this sound a little familiar?
The Golden Palace
If you don’t buy the Hot in Cleveland reboot theory, there’s also a sequel to The Golden Girls called The Golden Palace. While it’s not a Golden Girls reboot per se, this show included Estelle Getty as Sophia, Rue McClanahan as Blanch, and Betty White as Rose.
Bea Arthur made an appearance on the series for two episodes as Dorothy Hollingsworth and the series also starred Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin and ran for 24 episodes from 1992 to 1993, and told the story of the Girls deciding to run a hotel after Dorothy’s wedding.
Hollywood: Stay Away From The Golden Girls
Susan Harris, who created The Golden Girls has said there’s no chance that the Girls will return in a reboot. She points out that although the writing on the series could be uneven, what made the show such a smashing success was the cast, and without them, there can be no Golden Girls. While fans love the original, those involved in the series, as well as audiences, tend to agree that a Golden Girls reboot is a terrible idea.
