By Em Helena | Updated

Top Gun: Maverick star Glen Powell has announced that a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man is currently in the works. The sci-fi film will be directed by Edgar Wright, best known for his work on Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver. Wright’s version is said to be a much closer adaptation of King’s novel, something the 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger failed to do.

Glen Powell Confirms The Rumors

In an exclusive interview with IndieWire, Glen Powell confirmed that he would be starring in the new The Running Man and that filming will begin in the fall.

“The world that Edgar’s developed on this thing is just outrageous. It’s so good.” Powell told IndieWire, “We’re just both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it’s going to be a great character. I’m so fired up about it.”

Filming And Finishing His Degree

Despite his rising stardom and upcoming projects, Glen Powell has recently moved back to his hometown, Austin, Texas. Even though shooting for The Running Man will soon occur in London, Glen Powell announced that he is also determined to finish his degree at the University of Texas. Glen Powell elaborated to IndieWire that he would not be attending physical classes but instead would be zooming in from The Running Man set in London and would fly back for any proctored exams.

The Iconic Original

While it is unconfirmed what exact role Glen Powell will play in the new The Running Man, many assume he will portray the protagonist Ben Richards, who was originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Adapting more closely to Stephen King’s novel than its successor, the story follows Richards as he participates in a dystopian game show where contestants win money by evading hitmen sent to kill them.

Currently, Glen Powell stars in the movie Twisters, released July 17th. The recently released film is a remake of the 1996 film of the same title. Counting Top Gun: Maverick this makes The Running Man Glen Powell’s third reboot project. Since each has been met with a pretty generous reception, we hope that will continue to be true for the King adaptation.

Aside from what information Glen Powell leaked about The Running Man, no following news has come out about the project. Since filming has not even begun, we can assume that we’ll have a bit of a wait before it hits theaters. However, hopefully, in the coming months, more inside information about The Running Man will be revealed. Many are anxious to see what other Hollywood names will share the screen with Glen Powell.

The New Face Of Hollywood

With a string of recent hits under his belt, many fans hope that The Running Man will keep Glen Powell on the track to fame. Despite seeming like a new face, Glen Powell has been in the Hollywood industry for decades, first credited in Spy Kids 3: Game Over as a background character.

Fans are excited to see him finally getting the recognition he’s been working for and hope that his collaboration with Edgar Wright on The Running Man will grant Glen Powell future projects led by other major directors.
