Gina Carano is likely looking at the end of her Hollywood career, at least for the foreseeable future. After months of turmoil surrounding a number of different controversial social media posts, the actress was let go from her role on The Mandalorian on Wednesday. And now, others are distancing themselves from the actress. It appears her talent agency, UTA (United Talent Agency) has also dropped the actress and will no longer be representing her going forward. It’s likely their phones weren’t going to be ringing off the hook anyway.
In addition to UTA, ID PR, the public relations group representing Gina Carano, has also dropped the actress as well. That’s pretty much a clean sweep when it comes to employment for Carano for right now. She’s out of her hit television show and all representation she had within Hollywood has dropped her as well. It’s unlikely we see her on-screen for quite some time, or maybe ever again.
Gina Carano and her role in The Mandalorian have been in question for quite some time. After months of fans rallying to have the actress canceled because of a bevy of controversial social media posts, the scales finally tipped earlier this week. It was then that Carano shared an Instagram post that made a direct comparison between the treatment of the Jews during the Holocaust to how Republicans were being treated today in the United States. For the studio, who’d been conspicuously mum about Carano’s future at Disney, this was a bridge too far.
The exact quote in question from Gina Carano read like this:
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”
After this post, Disney was quick to remove Gina Carano from future projects and issued an unambiguous statement about the situation:
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”
Again, if you are just catching up on this situation, this is far from the first entry into the Gina Carano controversy. Things started back in November when she shared some posts that called into question the integrity of the United States Presidential Election and took digs at mask-wearing amidst the pandemic.
And Gina Carano didn’t take her foot off the gas in this respect over the next few months. She doubled and tripled down on her stances into the new year and even explained that she rather enjoyed dialing up the rhetoric and maybe even pushing fans’ buttons.
But during all of this, it wasn’t totally clear about her status on The Mandalorian or even new Star Wars shows like Rangers of the New Republic. Because her Cara Dune character had become integral to some of the storylines and really a fan favorite, it appeared the studio was hesitant to let her go. Plus, according to rumors, Jon Favreau didn’t care all that much about people’s political opinions and was of the mind to keep her.
But when The Mandalorian released some promotional material for the third season and Gina Carano was noticeably absent, it fueled up the rumors that Dune didn’t have a future on the show. If anything, the studio might have been planning this all along with the recent posts just the reason they needed to sever ties once and for all.
Now with her talent agency and public relations firm moving on as well, it’s unlikely we see Gina Carano up on screen for some time. There apparently was finally a breaking point with what she was sharing on social media and the latest posts were it. Do you think we see Gina Carano up on screen again or is this it for the actress?
