Gillian Anderson Joining Long-Awaited Sci-Fi Sequel
Gillian Anderson is the latest to join the cast of Tron 3, also known as Ares. While her role is currently being kept under wraps, she’ll join a star-studded cast that includes Jared Leto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. The film is directed by Joachim Ronning.
Tron: Ares Stars Jared Leto
While we don’t have any insight into who Gillian Anderson might be playing in the Tron threequel, we do know that the film will follow Leto’s character. Leto plays the titular Ares, who is a program from the Grid that ventures into the real world. It remains to be seen if the film is connected to the previous two films in the franchise other than the setting.
Tron: Ares Is In Production
Gillian Anderson’s casting is the latest exciting development on Tron: Ares this week, as director Joachim Ronning announced on Friday that the first week of production on the film had wrapped. The strikes earlier this summer had delayed production, and fans were patiently waiting to learn when the film would start back up again. With the cast set and production fully underway, it seems like we’ll be well on track to get an official release date for the film sooner than later.
Delays Might Impact Tron: Ares Release Date
Originally, the film was set for a 2025 release date, but it’s possible that the production delays may affect that timeline. Hopefully, we’ll see Leto, Gillian Anderson, and the rest of the cast in Tron: Ares sooner than later. Fans have waited a long time for another film from the beloved franchise, with 2010’s Tron: Legacy being the most recent entry.
The History Of Tron
Before that, we saw the original 1982 feature Tron, which starred Jeff Bridges as computer engineer Kevin Flynn, who is transported into the digital world of The Grid. Bridges returned for the sequel, which sees Kevin’s son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) get sucked into The Grid while investigating the disappearance of his father. While fans are disappointed that Daft Punk won’t be returning for the score as they did in Legacy, having talented actors like Gillian Anderson onboard for Tron: Ares does help it sting a little less.
Gillian Anderson Has Been Keeping Busy
Gillian Anderson recently starred in the fourth and final season of the acclaimed Netflix series Sex Education and will kick off her 2024 with films like Scoop and The Salt Path. Scoop stars Anderson as former BBC journalist Emily Maitlis and is based on the BBC 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. The Salt Path co-stars Jason Isaacs and adapted the memoir by Raynor Winn, which follows a couple who go on a 630-mile journey along the UK’s South West Coast Path after losing everything.
While neither of these films have release dates, they are both in the post-production phase. This is good because Gillian Anderson will likely be plenty busy with her filming schedule for Tron: Ares. We may have to wait a little longer to hear more about this highly anticipated sequel, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated on all things Tron in the meantime.
