Giancarlo Esposito is one of the few actors who can say he’s been in a movie directed by Stephen King, as King only has one directing credit to his name. King took it upon himself to direct Maximum Overdrive, an adaptation of his own short story Trucks, and Esposito had a small role in the film. Speaking about his experience on the film, Esposito said, “ I mean, I thought Stephen was brilliant in directing that film and thought he would have a long career as a director,” adding, “he was really good with the team of artisans who were making it.”

Maximum Overdrive Changed Stephen King’s Mind

Giancarlo Esposito may have thought Stephen King could have been a director full-time after making Maximum Overdrive, but the movie didn’t do well at the box office or with critics. While people have taken to the film since then, King decided to go back to his prolific career as a writer rather than make any more attempts at directing. Still, King has plenty of work to adapt, so maybe he’ll take on another directing role sometime in the future.

Giancarlo Esposito In Maximum Overdrive

Giancarlo Esposito played a small role in Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive as “Videoplayer,” where he gets a pretty entertaining death scene. So, while Esposito may not have extensive experience working with King, it still seems like it was more than enough to impress him. Esposito would also end up starring in an adaptation of another King short story much later in his career in the Creepshow series on Shudder.

Giancarlo Esposito’s turn as “Videoplayer” in Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive was quite early in his career, far before his star-making role in Breaking Bad as the ruthless drug lord and fast-food restaurateur Gus Fring. Esposito has since become a big star and reprised his role in Better Call Saul to a ton of acclaim. Recently, he also reprised his role as Stan Edgar in the latest episode of The Boys, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Esposito Returning To Horror In Maxxxine

Although Giancarlo Esposito has only appeared in a couple of Stephen King projects, he’s clearly not done with the horror genre as the actor’s next big appearance will be in the upcoming MaXXXine, which stars Mia Goth as a former adult film star who gets her big break in Hollywood, only for a serial killer to start stalking her. The film also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, and Kevin Bacon. If you want to see Esposito in that film, you’ll be able to catch it in theaters on July 5.

Plenty Of Upcoming King Projects For Esposito To Appear In

Perhaps Giancarlo Esposito could appear in another Stephen King project in the future, as there’s pretty much always a King adaptation in the works in Hollywood. The upcoming projects include films like Salem’s Lot, The Life of Chuck, and The Monkey. A major It spin-off is also coming to HBO titled Welcome to Derry that serves as a prequel to It and It Chapter Two.

Don’t Expect King To Direct Him Again

In any case, Giancarlo Esposito certainly seems like a big fan of Stephen King, as both a writer and director. It’s not hard to imagine that there’s a perfect King role for Esposito out there somewhere. Even if King won’t be the one directing him.
