Ghostface Killer From Scream Becomes Real In Terrifying Home Invasion Murder With Chainsaw
It’s life imitating art in one of the worst ways imaginable. Pennsylvania State Police say a man wearing a mask from the movie “Scream”, or the “Ghostface Killer” mask, entered his neighbor’s home armed with a knife and chainsaw and killed him.
Terrifying Situation
Trooper Anthony Petroski tells WFMZ-TV that 59-year-old Edward Whitehead Junior, of Carbon County, PA, was hit multiple times with a knife and a battery-operated chainsaw.
Police responded to the scene Monday afternoon after getting a report of an assault. Whitehead was rushed to St. Luke’s Carbon County Hospital, but did not survive the attack.
The Next Door Neighbor
The Morning Call reports investigators were able to obtain surveillance footage in which they saw a man disguised in the Ghostface Killer mask.
The suspect was seen entering the back of Whitehead’s home. After canvassing the area, police tracked the man down to his home. He is said to be Whitehead’s next-door neighbor, 30-year-old Zak Moyer.
According to court docs, Moyer told officers he thought Whitehead was a killer himself. A neighbor showed WFMZ-TV a video where Moyer is seen putting a note in his window. It reads in part, “Eddie Junior murdered women and kids last summer.”
Whitehead had never been charged with murder, according to the Pennsylvania Court System.
Surrendered Without Incident
Moyer surrendered to police without incident. At that point, he had changed out of his Ghostface Killer costume. Moyer first told police he just wanted to scare Whitehead, but later admitted that he stabbed Whitehead with a knife, returned to his home, hid the chainsaw and knife, and then watched a movie until the authorities got there.
Ghostface Incident Rocks The Community
Moyer was arraigned Tuesday morning. According to WFMZ-TV, he faces one charge of criminal homicide.
He’s currently being held in the Carbon County Correctional Facility, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 3. Before this crime, Moyer had never been charged with a crime in the State of Pennsylvania.
This Ghostface Killer killing has rocked the small Carbon County community of about 5,270 people 25 miles north of Allentown, PA.
From The Scream Franchise
If you are not familiar, A Ghostface Killer or Scream costume is a black hooded costume with a white ghost mask. It’s featured in the Scream horror movie franchise.
This tragic news comes just as Scream 7 is coming together in Hollywood. Scream veteran Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) has signed on and industry insider Daniel RPK says Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) will return as well. Kevin Williamson is set to direct.
The first Scream hit theaters in 1996. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson wrote the film based on the Gainesville Ripper, a.k.a. Louisiana-born Danny Rolling. Rolling was a real-life serial rapist and murderer in the late 80s and early 90s who inspired Williamson to create his iconic Ghostface Killer villain.
In total, Rolling confessed to killing eight people. He was executed by lethal injection in 2006.
Other Copycat Crimes
The Scream film series has grossed more than $900 million at the global box office.
In another example of life imitating art, in 2006, Cassie Jo Stoddart was murdered by her classmates Brian Lee Draper and Torey Michael Adamcik in Pocatello, Idaho.
The perpetrators said they were inspired to murder Stoddart by the film Scream, which led to them being nicknamed “The Scream Killers”.
