Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Changes Release Date And Fans Are Stoked

The Ghostbusters franchise has seen its fair share of schedule adjustments. Initially slated for a December 2023 release, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was later rescheduled to March 2024. While the update doesn’t have fans seeing the movie as early as they might have hoped, one week earlier is still good news. 

When the Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was moved to the March 29 release date, many fans were confused because that date coincided with another Sony movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. It seems strange to release the two films at the same time as they could potentially cannibalize each other and hurt overall opening weekend numbers. However, the Spider-Man film faced delays due to strikes involving writers and actors during the summer, leaving an opening for Ghostbusters to claim that date instead.

Now, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire has been moved up to an even earlier release date of March 22. However, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is still postponed indefinitely with no news on when fans will be able to see the finale of that particular trilogy.

This discovery unleashes an evil force, compelling both the new and original Ghostbusters to unite in a battle to protect their home and prevent a second Ice Age from engulfing the world.Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire boasts a star-studded cast, with Coon, Wolfhard, and Grace reprising their roles, alongside Paul Rudd. Original Ghostbusters Aykroyd, Hudson, and Murray are joined by newcomers Kumail Nanjiani and Patton Oswalt. Ghostbusters: Afterlife writers Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman have collaborated on the script, with Kenan also taking the directorial helm for Frozen Empire.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the fifth installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, directly following Afterlife. Afterlife, which was released in 2021 and received generally positive reviews from audiences and critics alike was a global success, accumulating $204.4 million in ticket sales offsetting a budget of $75 million. The entire Ghostbusters franchise is based on the original film written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.
