Ghost Rider is one of the craziest characters in the entire Marvel canon, and if a certain rumor is to be believed, he could be brought to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by none other than Keanu Reeves.

Keanu Reeves has actually been rumored for the role of Ghost Rider in the past, but this newest rumor says he is closer than ever to the part. That would contradict some other recent rumors about Reeves being attached to play the spectral vigilante Moon Knight. He was also supposedly courted for other roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel.

It seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe really wants Keanu Reeves to join its multimedia empire. Would Ghost Rider be the right fit for him? The rumor states that Reeves would be playing the Johnny Blaze iteration of the character – yes, there have been many, many Ghost Riders – who was originally brought to the big screen by Nicolas Cage in the 2007 film Ghost Rider and its 2011 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

More importantly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has actually introduced Ghost Rider in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, this was the Roberto “Robbie” Reyes version of the character, so introducing Johnny Blaze wouldn’t necessarily step on the toes of anything that has been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. It is likely that any new version of the character would probably ignore or only lightly reference anything from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series.

It isn’t even clear in what capacity Ghost Rider would make his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the rumors mentions that he would appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Would this be as an official prime universe version of the character or a version of Ghost Rider from one of the many potential universes that we will see in the film?

Regardless, it is no secret that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige wants Keanu Reeves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has publicly spoken about his conversations with Reeves, but no specific roles have ever been brought up. Whether or not Ghost Rider is one of those roles? Nobody can say for sure, but the two main roles that seem to keep popping up around Reeves are Moon Knight and Ghost Rider. It sounds like Feige wants Reeves to anchor a supernatural facet of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The next era of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects is going to be very interesting. Things are going to get very weird as more wild corners of the universe begin to be revealed. Ghost Rider is a truly nutty character with a world that would bring in literal demons to all the other cosmic shenanigans. Such a character would definitely require a solid actor to sell all of the insanity, and Keanu Reeves has more than proven he can do just that in films like The Matrix and John Wick. If he does end up becoming the Spirit of Vengeance, we will be very excited.
