Marvel has often been good about introducing *new* characters to the universe through cameos in other movies. It’s been a way to build excitement, to grease the wheels so to speak, before we ever catch that guy or gal in a feature of their own. It looks like that will be the case with Ghost Rider who will be getting his first spin in the MCU when he shows up in some way in another film. According to That Hashtag Show, Ghost Rider will be appearing in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness in some fashion.
According to this latest rumor, the news that Ghost Rider will be appearing in the next Doctor Strange movie comes through having seen some concept art related to the film. While this isn’t a firm confirmation that Johnny Blaze is coming onto the screen in the movie, it would at least appear that the idea is in discussion and there could be a possible role for him here. It would be a welcome addition and considering the reported size and scope of this next film, would also make a lot of sense in how they could get him in on the action even for a brief moment or two.
We have a couple of different iterations of the Ghost Rider character on both the big and small screen so far, though the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unlikely to reprise either version for their next turn with the dude. The first was the Nicolas Cage version from the original Ghost Rider movie and then the follow-up Spirit of Vengeance. Neither film was well-received, to say the least, and didn’t do justice to a darker and violent character from the comic book pages.
Then we saw Ghost Rider in the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series, portrayed by Gabriel Luna and delving into the Robbie Reyes version of the character. This was a slightly different spin, allowing for multiple takes on the character depending on how the MCU decided to swing things. There was originally a planned series that was going to take place on HULU which would have explored this character more, but that was eventually scrapped.
It’s likely this next Ghost Rider version to crop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be a total reset for the character. It only makes sense considering the other ones are mostly out of the mix at this point. It’s worth mentioning that this original rumor about the Multiverse of Madness cameo also lets on that the MCU’s plan for Ghost Rider is to use him similarly to how they used the Mark Ruffalo version of the Hulk. In this way, he wouldn’t be getting his own movie or series, but would instead just be a player in other productions and narrative arcs along the way. That kind of thing could always change, but it appears to be the plan out of the gate.
With Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness gearing up to be a huge crossover event for the franchise, it stands to reason Ghost Rider isn’t the only first-time cameo we see in the film. There could be many others. But it would also be a great time to bring him on board.
