George Lucas Wants Star Wars Back
Is George Lucas ready to take back control of Star Wars?

Can you imagine working on something for 40 years and then selling it? That’s what George Lucas did when he sold LucasFilm to Disney in 2012. Of course, he sold it for $4 billion, which certainly must have helped to take some of the sting out of that decision. Lucas was already well off, though, so the money wasn’t a primary motivator. He has said that he sold off the company so he could put his focus elsewhere, namely, on his family.
However, every fan wonders if he regrets that decision. Moreover, they want to know if he wants back in? Now, according to what insider Daniel Richtman has shared with his Patreon page, George Lucas wants some control back over the company. Richtman doesn’t get too specific in what he has heard, but says that Lucas wants more involvement at LucasFilm in general, both in terms of the development of Star Wars and in other parts of how the company is run in general.
From an outsider’s perspective, most of us assume that the most painful part of selling LucasFilm would be watching as the Star Wars universe develops in ways he can’t control. However, when you run a company, you make decisions about the workplace culture and what projects the company pursues. Every little detail of what happens at LucasFilm is something he would have had control over if he were in charge. While he’s putting his focus and time elsewhere, it still must be painful to hear about decisions you could have had a hand in. Letting go of LucasFilm can’t be easy, even all these years later.
In fact, George Lucas has expressed some of his feelings about this in the past. He’s said that selling the company was very painful for him. He’s also shared that, except for the six movies he made himself, that Star Wars has gotten far away from his own values and vision. This is understandable, since watching someone else run your life’s work would be a strange experience. Whether their decisions turn out well or not, it’s not what you would have done
This isn’t the first time there have been rumors that George Lucas wants more control of LucasFilm and/or Star Wars. It’s unlikely this is the last time we’ll hear news like this, either. While Lucas doesn’t say a whole lot, he is still open about the pain he feels being separated from LucasFilm. Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the creator wants back in. The company currently has many productions in the works. They are expanding the Star Wars universe like never before. There are so many television shows and movies coming that it can be part to keep up with.
Moreover, even if George Lucas wants back in, and is ready to make room for that in his life, it’s hard to believe that LucasFilm has a place for him. The creator has said that when he sold the company, he shared what his plans were for the next trilogy with Disney. They decided to go in a largely different direction. It’s been said that George Lucas felt betrayed by those decisions. If Disney has already established that they’re taking LucasFilm and Star Wars in their own direction, it’s difficult to see why they would find it advantageous to give Lucas greater control over the company. Maybe George Lucas does want LucasFilm back. But why would Disney give it up?
