George Lopez is back! What will the name of his new show be?
This article is more than 2 years old
If you tuned in to late-night TV in the 2000s to hear this song, then you were probably a big fan of the George Lopez TV show. Now it looks like Lopez is returning to his sitcom roots with the upcoming Lopez Vs. Lopez on NBC. Lopez Vs. Lopez will be a multi-camera sitcom, so it will probably feel very familiar to fans of Lopez’s most popular show.
Lopez Vs. Lopez will also feature Maya Lopez, George Lopez’s daughter. The show is brought to us by the duo of Bruce Helford and Debby Wolfe. Helford co-created the 2002 George Lopez sitcom. Wolfe is the writer for the project and came up with the idea. In addition to Maya and George Lopez, the show will also be starring Selenis Leyva, Brice Gonzalez, Matt Shively, Laci Mosley, and Kiran Deol. The show will likely be launching in Fall or in the midseason.
George Lopez is a very busy man according to his upcoming release schedule. In addition to Lopez Vs. Lopez, he has another TV show in development called Once Upon a Time in Aztlan. One of his biggest projects is the upcoming DC blockbuster Blue Beetle, which is due out in the summer of 2023. Blue Beetle tells the story of a Mexican teenager who gets superpowered armor from an alien beetle. Lopez will play Uncle Rudy Reyes in the film. The movie also stars Susan Sarandon, Harvey Guillen, Elpidia Carillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Xolo Mariduena, and more.
George Lopez has three more films lined up for the near future as well with The Mustang Miracle, Afterward, and Whale Talk. The Mustang Miracle tells the story of five young Mexican-American gold caddies who create their own course in the South Texas desert to teach themselves how to play the game. The movie is based on the book by Humberto G. Garcia. Afterward tells the story of a father dealing with the death of their daughter and fighting corruption in small-town politics. In addition to Lopez, this film also stars Aaron Eckhart, Beverly D’Angelo, Terrence Howard, and more. Whale Talk tells the story of a young black teen named TJ living in the predominantly white city of Cutter, Washington. TJ puts together a swim team for his high school despite the fact the school doesn’t have a pool.
Needless to say, George Lopez definitely has a lot to keep him busy in the near future. Lopez Vs. Lopez will certainly add to that workload, especially if it ends up getting picked up for more seasons. If it ends up being a hit for NBC, we could be seeing a lot more of Lopez and his daughter on the series. It’s always tough to tell if these series will make it further than a pilot, much less a first season, so it remains to be seen how successful this venture is going to be. Still, George Lopez might be enough of a draw to get the audience paying attention. You’ll be able to see Lopez Vs. Lopez for yourself when it airs on NBC, presumably later this year.
