Our Geena Davis Netflix Sci-Fi Series Scoop Confirmed
Geena Davis may not be reprising her undead role in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but some big casting news just broke about the star, and we were the first ones to let you know about it. Back in May, we exclusively reported that Geena Davis would be one of the leads of The Boroughs, the next big Netflix series from Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer. The Hollywood Reporter just confirmed our scoop, along with some more exciting news about the creatives in front of and behind the camera.
The Cast
We originally heard Richard Gere would be the male lead of the series, but it looks like things have changed. Instead of Gere, THR reports Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home) will star opposite Geena Davis in The Boroughs. While we still don’t have a lot of details about the series, we do have the characters’ first names—Davis is playing Renee while Molina will play Sam.
They will be joined by an impressive cast including Alfred Woodard (Annabelle), Denis O’Hare (Dallas Buyers Club), Clarke Peters (The Wire), and Bill Pullman (Independence Day). Their character names are Judy (Woodard), Wally (O’Hare), Art (Peters) and Jack (Pullman).
The Creators Behind The Camera
The Duffer brothers are bringing Geena Davis to The Boroughs for what is just one of a longer list of projects they’ve been developing for Netflix. THR says the streamer has also ordered another series from the Duffers and co-creator Haley Z. Boston with the ominous title Something Very Bad Is Going On.
Another pair of Netflix veterans, Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Cystal: Age of Resistance), are co-creators and showrunners for The Boroughs. As executive producers, they’re joined by Ben Taylor (Sex Education) who will direct a number of episodes, as well as Hilary Leavitt (Killing Eve).
The Story
Details are scarce about what exactly Geena Davis and company’s characters will be contending with in The Boroughs. All we have so far is the logline, “In a seemingly picturesque retirement community, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have — time.”
When we first learned about Geena Davis’ casting in The Boroughs, the logline lead us to a comparison with the 1985 sci-fi classic Cocoon, a fitting one considering the Duffers’ love for 1980s cinema. Plot-wise it also sounds similar to the 2002 cult comedy horror Bubba Ho-Tep, in which Bruce Campbell stars as an elderly Elvis Presley battling evil forces preying on a retirement home.
Release
It’s tough to say exactly when we can expect to see Geena Davis and the rest of the cast star in The Boroughs, though considering everything, 2025 would seem to be the absolute earliest that it would stream.
As exciting as The Boroughs sounds, fans are likely much more eager to get the long-awaited fifth and final season of Stranger Things. It’s already been two years since Season 4’s explosive conclusion.
Geena Davis
Geena Davis fell off a lot of radars until very recently, and—should it prove nearly as popular as Stranger Things—The Boroughs may prove to be a big part of her renaissance. Davis has been making more prominent screen appearances lately, most recently showing up in the controversial Channing Tatum-led thriller Blink Twice.
