All Of The Game Of Thrones Spinoff Series Are In Trouble?
George R.R. Martin has revealed the HBO Max merger with Discovery+ has halted some Game of Thrones shows.
George R.R. Martin has given the world a bit of a huge update about the longevity of the Game of Thrones universe via the blog that he writes, though the update might not be what people want to read. According to Martin’s blog, “A couple [shows] have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead…you can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”
That is some terrible news, considering that House of the Dragon became one of the most popular shows on streaming. Granted, that series may continue, but it sounds like the future Games of Thrones spinoffs that had been planned could no longer be moving forward. We do know that one of those spinoffs was meant to follow the life of Jon Snow, presumably after the events of the mainline story.
George R.R. Martin did indicate in his blog post that Winds of Winter is still being worked on, as is House of the Dragon Season 2. In fact, Martin stated that some of the plot points in House of the Dragon were written so that the “prophecy” ties into his Winds of Winter novel. This could mean that we are going to see a Game of Thrones sequel series or “successor” series as Martin has explained in his blog.
Clearly, the good news in this is that Game of Thrones is moving forward with a more expanded universe, but it could also mean that many of the properties that were being planned are not going to happen now. This is good and bad news, but we certainly hope that the Warner Bros. Discovery merger does not affect House of the Dragon, as we all need to see more dragon fighting going on. Especially after the season finale, which we will not spoil here, but go watch the show already.
We would imagine that HBO would not allow House of the Dragon to fall by the wayside while the company goes through a major shakeup in its format, simply because the new prequel series has surpassed Game of Thrones in popularity. Well, that’s to say House of the Dragon surpassed Game of Thrones in terms of its inaugural season. We are not sure how House of the Dragon is going to stack up once it hits seasons three and four.
Still, it sounds like we are all going to have to wait even longer while George R.R. Martin finishes his last book. That book could be the thing holding up the successor seasons of Game of Thrones, on top of the issues happening at Warner Bros. Discovery. Either way, we all need some more House of the Dragon in our lives, and we definitely want to see what happens in this Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon is currently streaming on HBO Max right now. Though we believe that the show is going to remain safe, people had better watch it now, in case WBD decides to do something drastic like get rid of it. It is an honestly fantastic show that harkens back to the days when Game of Thrones first came out and captivated the world.
