Gamera: Rebirth Video Shows How The Monster Was Re-Designed For The Netflix Anime
Studio ENGI, the production company behind the upcoming Gamera: Rebirth series, has released a behind-the-scenes video showcasing how the iconic monster was re-designed for Netflix. The one-minute and 50-second clip sees the talented team working with sketches, 3D imaging, and scale models to attain the perfect aesthetic for the upcoming show.
The Gamera: Rebirth series revolves around sixth-grade students Boko, Joe, and Junichi, who are enjoying their last summer vacation before moving on to the next phase of their lives. However, things take a turn when Brody, the son of a US military commander, takes their shared savings without permission.
The monsters mentioned in the synopsis previously fought in Gamera vs. Gyaos, a film released in 1967.
This action angers Boko and his friends, leading them to devise a plan to reclaim their money. Before they can put their plan into action, a new danger emerges. The city is threatened by a kaiju named Gyaos, which suddenly attacks Tokyo. In the midst of the chaos, the friends find themselves trapped. Just as Gyaos sets its sights on them, a massive kaiju named Gamera appears.
When Does Gamera: Rebirth Premiere On Netflix?
This marks the beginning of an extraordinary “Summer of Kaiju” defined by the presence of these colossal creatures. Gamera: Rebirth will premiere on Netflix on September 7 and promised plenty of exciting monster battles over its six-episode run.
The monsters mentioned in the synopsis previously fought in Gamera vs. Gyaos, a film released in 1967. During this encounter, Gyaos, a creature whose origins were not clearly explained, lived in a cave. However, subsequent clues in the story suggested that Gyaos might have actually come from outer space. This was further hinted at in the 1969 movie Gamera vs. Guiron.
With five kaiju causing chaos in Gamera: Rebirth, Gamera is probably not the sole cause of the city’s devastation seen in the trailer. Initially depicted as a forceful adversary in 1965’s Gamera, the Giant Monster, the character evolved in later movies. Gamera became a defender of humanity, earning titles such as “the friend of all children” and “the guardian of the universe.”
Gamera Through The Years
Gamera: Rebirth won’t be the first time Gamera is reborn. Following a pause in the franchise’s progress in 1971, Gamera returned after nine years in Gamera: Super Monster. This production took a cost-effective approach, piecing together the film using pre-existing footage from various sources, including movies beyond the Gamera series.
A more comprehensive reboot took place in 1995, leading to Gamera’s well-received Heisei era. Despite several endeavors to revive Gamera in recent years, these efforts have been plagued by obstacles and delays. However, the kaiju genre has experienced a resurgence on a global scale. An Apple+ series connected to Godzilla is on the way, alongside a follow-up to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
The popularity of anime like Gamera: Rebirth on Netflix has been growing significantly in recent years. According to an interview with Netflix anime head Kohei Obara, half of the streamer’s 222 million global subscribers watched some anime on the platform in 2021. Over 100 million households watched at least one anime title between October 2019 and September 2020.
