The fantasy television world has been shaken upside down with the recent announcement that there will be a Jo Snow-led Game of Thrones sequel series, with Kit Harington set to return. Now though, in an interview with Collider, another beloved Game of Thrones actor is musing about a return to the world of Westeros. The actor in question is Gwendoline Christie. Could one of Game of Thrones’ best characters in Brienne of Tarth be returning for the Jon Snow sequel?
In the light of the exciting announcement that Kit Harington will return to the world of Game of Thrones in a Jon Snow sequel series, Collider’s Christina Radish was quick to ask Gwendoline Christie whether fans will be able to see more of Brienne of Tarth in the future. Here is what Christie had to say: “There are so many directors that I would love to work with and I want to create different kinds of work. That is my focus. However, I will never stop loving Brienne of Tarth, and I will never stop being interested in her.”
It is a typically noncommittal answer from an actor when put under the cosh of a teasing question However, given that Brienne of Tarth is one of few characters that survived the ending of Game of Thrones, and her affinity to the Stark household, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Gwendoline Christie was to feature in the upcoming Jon Snow sequel.
Before fans can see the likes of Kit Harington and potentially Gwendoline Christie, the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon will be airing this year on HBO Max. The show is set to make its bow on August 21 and stars the likes of Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy in a story focusing on the powerful Targaryen dynasty, and their claim to the iron throne centuries before the events of Game of Thrones. There will, of course, be dragons involved in this series. Joining the likes of Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy in the cast are Paddy Considine (Dead Man’s Shoes, Hot Fuzz), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One, Sound of Metal) and Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, The Amazing Spider-Man).
House of the Dragon is not the only spin-off series that is in the works. As well as the Jon Snow sequel to Game of Thrones, fans of Westeros will soon be privy to a whole host of exciting new stories. SlashFilm writes that in addition to House of the Dragon and the Jon Snow sequel, there will be three other live-action spin-offs as well as three different animated series. However, the majority of these spin-off series are set well before the events of Game of Thrones, meaning that if Gwendoline Christie were to appear in a show, it would most definitely be the Jon Snow sequel.
Given how recent the announcement of Jon Snow’s sequel was, it is unlikely that further stars will reveal if they are on board the project as well at this time. The same goes for Gwendoline Christie, who of course stated that she has a focus on new roles and working with new directors. This year, Gwendoline Christie has two major Netflix productions on her cv. The first is a role in Wednesday, the series focussing on Wednesday Addams’ years as a student. And the second role is in the new Netflix adaptation of Sandman, where Christie will be playing the role of Lucifer. Fans will surely be excited to see the actress in her new roles, but they would be even more excited if Brienne of Tarth were to appear in the new Jon Snow Game of Thrones sequel.
