Game Of Thrones Prequel Reveals A Shocking Number of Dragons
More dragons to be expected in the Game of Thrones prequel -- a lot more.

HBO’s mega-hit series Game of Thrones wrapped its eighth and final season in 2019 and fans have been eagerly waiting for the HBO spin-off ever since. During a recent podcast appearance, creator George R.R. Martin shared some new details about House of the Dragon, which he reveals will live up to its title.
Martin stopped by The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of podcast, which is hosted by showrunner of the Game of Thrones prequel series Ryan Condal. In the last six minutes of the in-depth interview, Martin shared what he’s most excited to see in the new show. And not surprisingly, it’s the dragons – all 17 of them!
I’ve always thought this was a cool story, it’s one I like, so I’m looking forward to seeing it come alive onscreen. And of course, I’m looking forward to the dragons, obviously, I love the dragons. And we had three of them in Game of Thrones, but now we have like 17 of them… And hopefully they’ll each have their own personalities, they’ll be instantly recognizable when you see them, the colors and all of that because the dragons do have personalities in the books, and it’ll be great to see that come alive, and the dragon riders. That’s all pretty cool.”

In addition to Martin’s revelation that the prequel will have more dragons than the original Game of Thrones series, in a post on social media HBO announced the addition of seven new cast members. This includes Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Bill Paterson, and Gavin Spokes. Ryan Corr, Jefferson Hall, and David Horovitch have also been cast.
Written by Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon will be based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood series. Set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series tells the story of House Targaryen, rich in the dragonlord ancestors of Daenerys. It will focus on the Targaryen civil war that ravaged Westeros and set the stage for the events of the original Game of Thrones series.
Showrunner Ryan Condal is working on House of the Dragon alongside Game of Thrones veteran Miguel Sapochnik, who will be directing the pilot and additional episodes. The series has received a ten-episode order from HBO. Previously confirmed cast members for House of the Dragon include Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, and Emma D’Arcy as well as Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, Milly Alcock, and Emily Carey.
It was revealed that the Game of Thrones spin-off will have five main characters, including King Viserys Targaryen (Considine), Alicent Hightower (Cooke), Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (D’Arcy), Prince Daemon Targaryen (Smith), and Lord Corlys Velaryon / The Sea Snake (Toussaint).
Ifans will play Otto Hightower, the hand of the King, Best has been cast as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Mizuno plays Mysaria, an ally to Prince Daemon Targaryen, Fabien Frankel will play Ser Criston Cole, Alcock is Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Carey is set to portray Young Alicent Hightower. Ryan Corr is Ser Harwin ‘Breakbones’ Strong, Jefferson Hall is Lord Jason Lannister, the Lord of Casterly Rock as well as his twin Tyland Lannister, a crafty and calculating politician.
David Horovitch is playing Grand Maester Mellos, Graham McTavish is Ser Harrold Westerling of the Kingsguard, Matthew Needham is Larys Strong, Bill Paterson plays Lord Lyman Beesbury, and Gavin Spokes is Lord Lyonel Strong.
HBO hasn’t revealed an official release date for House of the Dragon yet. But it’s been tentatively scheduled for a 2022 premiere. In the meantime, you can give Game of Thrones seasons one through eight a re-watch. The entire series is available everywhere movies and series are sold.
