Game of Thrones Is Getting Another Prequel Series
Game of Thrones is eyeing another prequel series based on Aegon I Targaryen.
After the success of House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones franchise looks to be getting yet another prequel series. The new show, which may focus on the very first Aegon I Targaryen and his journey to conquer Westeros, is currently being discussed by HBO, according to Variety. This is in addition to the fact that House of the Dragon is already set to return for a second season.
The story of Aegon I Targaryen would definitely be a fascinating one to watch. It would include how Aegon (along with his sister-wives) conquered six of the seven kingdoms, allowing him to become the first king of Westeros. Much like the other Game of Thrones TV shows, the new prequel would surely include plenty of action, drama, romance, and of course, dragons.
While House of the Dragon took place two hundred years before the original Game of Thrones series, the new prequel would take place three hundred years before the original Game of Thrones events. If the new prequel is similar to House of the Dragon, it will focus mainly on the Targaryen family reign and include other long and intertwined family houses like House Stark, House Lannister, and House Baratheon.
There are no cast members or writers set for the new series yet, since there is still a lot of planning to be done. It’s safe to say that we won’t see any of the similar cast from either of the prior TV shows unless they appear in a flash-forward scene.
Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in the original Game of Thrones series, has admitted that she has not watched the prequel House of the Dragon, so we don’t expect she will tune in to this new prequel or be cast in it.
So far, George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones books have only been adapted into TV shows, but that could change with this new prequel. There may be a feature film that launches prior to the new TV series, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe strategy. With the success of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, it’s no wonder why HBO would like to keep expanding the franchise.
Even after the controversial ending of Game of Thrones, fans still dove headfirst into the prequel series, House of the Dragon, when it was released in August 2022. Over 10 million viewers watched the prequel series that led up to the incredible Dance of Dragons, a civil war between the rival branches of House Targaryen.
House of the Dragon was such a rapid success that its renewal for Season 2 was confirmed just days after the first season aired. Production is already well under way, and fans of the franchise can expect Season 2 to air in the summer of 2024. However, fans will have to hang tight for a release date for this new potential prequel.
