Gal Gadot Returning As Wonder Woman Sooner Than Expected?
James Gunn debunked a rumor on Twitter that Wonder Woman won't appear in the next three years, leading to speculation that Gal Gadot will be back soon.
Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in October of 2022, the future of DC films has exploded into chaotic speculation. Henry Cavill will not return as Superman, Patty Jenkins departed her Gal Gadot-led Wonder Woman sequel, and it is rumored that Margot Robbie is the only actor guaranteed a place in the new DC regime’s vision of the future. The rumor mill may slow production (or at least become more focused) after official DC project announcements come later this month, but James Gunn gave a hint about the upcoming slate when he implied on Twitter that Wonder Woman will be back within the next three years.
The Twitter user @HomeOfDCU shared a Variety article reporting that Wonder Woman would not appear in Gunn and Safran’s three-year plan for the DCU. @dcabove replied to the tweet with a plea to James Gunn to “please debunk this one”, to which Gunn responded, “I hereby debunk it (only because it’s not true).” Gunn’s implication that Wonder Woman would be back sooner than expected comes as good news for fans, but it also raises a key question: What about Gal Gadot?
The big shakeups at DC have cast doubt on whether or not Gal Gadot would return as Wonder Woman, a part she has played since 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The departure of Patty Jenkins from Wonder Woman 3 left a sense that the project was dead, but as James Gunn has made clear to many doubting fans on social media, only he and Peter Safran know what is coming for the DCU. Gunn told another doubtful DC fan, who lamented the “booting” of Gal Gadot on Twitter, “I’m not sure where you’re getting that we ‘booted’ Gal.”
James Gunn is known for responding to fans and clarifying rumors on social media, and his time at DC has had him setting the record straight at an unprecedented rate. As the more public facing member of the DC leadership, Gunn has done his best to shut down falsehoods and toxic whisperings before they spread too far. However, he and Safran have not yet given many straight answers about their blossoming plans for DC, including whether or not Gal Gadot will return as Wonder Woman.
Gal Gadot has largely been praised for her performance as Wonder Woman, and recently expressed excitement about continuing the character’s story in future projects. That sentiment, however, came before the news broke about Patty Jenkins’ departure from the franchise.
Gal Gadot isn’t the only actor on hold with DC. 2023 will see the return of Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as two different versions of Batman, and Zachary Levi as Shazam. How those films will affect the future of DC (or if they will at all) is still a mystery, but The Flash may hold the key to pulling off the apparent reset coming for the DCU.
The Flash (which reportedly cut out a cameo from Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman) is expected to be a multiverse film, which could open the door to a new canon in an alternate reality, or a reset of the entire DC universe. In any case, by Gunn’s own admission, it seems that a new Wonder Woman story is on the horizon, with or without Gal Gadot. Fans will have to wait for Gunn and Safran to yield to the Lasso of Truth before any further details about the future of DC emerge.
