Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Comes To Max Streaming

By Britta DeVore | Published

Audiences will soon have the opportunity to welcome the Wasteland directly into their living rooms as Max has set the streaming date debut for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Whether you saw the movie on the big screen and want to catch it again, or didn’t make it to the cinema for George Miller’s latest chapter in his epic film series, you can add Furiosa to your watch list this weekend thanks to its arrival on August 16. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (Dune: Part Two) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder), the movie takes audiences on the journey of what happened to the titular character before her path crossed with Max’s (Tom Hardy) in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road

The Green Place Of Many Mothers

When we first meet Furiosa at the beginning of the movie, she’s a young child living peacefully in what’s become known as the Green Place of Many Mothers. This is the place that Charlize Theron’s character in Fury Road is trying to travel back to with the kidnapped wives of Immorten Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). It’s here that the young girl is kidnapped by two raiders who take the wily little thing as a prize for their leader, Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).

The movie then follows Furiosa’s years growing up alongside Dementus and the rest of his crew and depicts how she becomes the no-nonsense, selfless, and brave grownup that we meet down the line. We also find out how she ends up as a driver for Immorten Joe, with the final scene of Furiosa setting up the character’s opening in Fury Road.

Like every other film in George Miller’s decades-long dystopian franchise, Furiosa is fueled by dazzling colors, outlandish characters, gargantuan war rigs, and greed-driven mindsets. It’s a movie filled with explosions, brutal killings, and pulse-pounding moments as the audience waits to see how the titular killing machine gets herself out of impossible binds.

Didn’t Meet Expectations At The Box Office

While it was one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year, right up there with other titles like Dune: Part Two and Deadpool & Wolverine, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga didn’t quite live up to the hype. The movie celebrated its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before arriving in cinemas later in May. With theaters eager to screen what was certain to be a money-making title, Furiosa’s gas ran out almost as soon as it got into gear, raking in only $172.8 million at the global box office against its production budget of $168-233 million.

Is This The End Of The Mad Max Saga?

Not only was this bad news for the folks attached to Furiosa but it also left a massive question mark over the continuation of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic franchise. Following the staggering success of Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller not only wanted to shine a light on Furiosa’s backstory but also take audiences along for the journey of what Max was up to before the events of the critically celebrated 2015 high-octane flick.

Sadly, it doesn’t seem very likely that fans will ever get to see what the creative team had waiting on the back-burner, as it will be nearly impossible for Miller to get the Max-centered prequel green-lit considering the financial loss of Furiosa.

Still, Max subscribers will have the chance to immerse themselves in the gritty world of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga when the film revs its engine and arrives on the streamer on August 16, 2024.
