Frozen is one of the biggest hits of the modern Disney animation era, with the rare distinction (for Disney animation) of getting a theatrical sequel to the original with Frozen 2. With success like that, it seems like Frozen 3 is almost inevitable. While Disney has been mum on the matter, it seems like Idina Menzel is more than ready to come back and voice the ice-powered Elsa. She said as much in an interview with People, saying she hopes the movie is in the works.

Disney is one of the busiest companies out there when it comes to movie releases, so while Frozen 3 is always a possibility until someone higher up says otherwise, they definitely have a lot on the release slate to worry about first. Disney’s recent animated efforts include Encanto, which was a smash hit, in no small part due to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical contributions. The Disney-owned Pixar also released two movies this year —Turning Red and the now in-theaters Lightyear. That’s not even considering all of the major Marvel movie releases Disney has in store for the rest of the year and beyond.

Before returning to the kingdom of Arendelle for Frozen 3, Disney seems pretty focused on bringing back a lot of their classic animations for live-action takes. The trend that started with movies like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King will be continuing in at the end of this year with Peter Pan & Wendy and Pinocchio. A live-action version of The Little Mermaid is also planned for 2023.

As of now, the next best thing fans can get from the Frozen universe is the series of shorts and TV series with Frozen Fever, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, At Home With Olaf, and Olaf Presents. While fans love Josh Gad’s animated snowman Olaf, they’ll want to see Elsa and Anna return for more adventures in Frozen 3. For now, the only animations planned for Disney Animation in the next couple of years are Strange World, The Familiars, Masters of Fury: The Legend of Sun Wukong, and Pixar’s Elemental. Of course, Disney can always make surprise announcements, so fans don’t have to count out Frozen 3 yet.

However, before pursuing Frozen 3, it does seem likely that Disney will want to keep their hot streak going from the recent success of Encanto. The unprecedented fan reaction has led to rumors that there would be more from the Encanto universe soon. This would make sense, as Disney could capitalize on the still ongoing hype that the movie has. While fans want Frozen 3, it doesn’t have the immediate top-of-mind status that Encanto does at the moment. Whether we see Frozen 3 in the near future or not, you can count on Disney releasing a ton more movies throughout the rest of the year and beyond. If you’re skipping Lightyear, you can still count on Disney to bring us Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Strange World, and Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters before the year is over.
