Freddie Prinze Jr. Making Triumphant Return In New Rom-Com
The stars of turn of the century rom-coms films like Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You would go on to have massive careers; Anne Hathaway took her role in The Princess Diaries and became one of the most sought-after women in Hollywood. One of the biggest movies from the time was She’s All That and its star, Freddie Prinze Jr., and now, according to Variety, the actor is making his return in a Christmas movie on Netflix.
Christmas With You is the newest movie Netflix is using to get people into the spirit and to compete with heavy holiday hitters like Hallmark and GAC. When Angelina (Aimee Garcia), a famous recording artist, faces losing her recording contract if she doesn’t come up with a holiday hit, she escapes the confines of Christmas-time New York to go to a small town where she meets struggling songwriter Miguel. Freddie Prinze Jr. appears as the struggling song scribe and widowed music teacher, and also the male lead who predictably becomes the romantic interest for the artist.
While it may be pulled straight out of Hallmark‘s holiday tropes, Netflix hopes to be the newest player in the Christmas game.
Freddie Prinze Jr. may have gotten his first widespread exposure as one of the small group of popular high school kids who accidentally killed a pedestrian and covered it up in the horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. Still, he was arguably overshadowed by the likes of Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer), Ryan Phillipe (Cruel Intentions), and Sarah Michelle Geller (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), so his star didn’t rise until he became the lead in one of the most popular teen romantic comedies in history in She’s All That. The film also starred many big names, including Rachael Leigh Cook (Psyche and Las Vegas), Matthew Lillard (Scooby-Doo), Paul Walker (The Fast and the Furious), Anna Paquin (X-Men), and Gabrielle Union (Bring it On).
Freddie Prinze Jr. hasn’t been entirely silent since his time on She’s All That, as he went on after that to star in Scooby-Doo and its sequel, where he also met his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar. He also appeared in his own series for a single season and took a role on Friends and Boston Legal. Some of his more prominent roles have been as a CTU agent in one season of the Fox mega-hit 24, opposite Kiefer Sutherland, and as the voice of Kanan Jarrus in the animated Star Wars: Rebels. While Christmas with You may not be the biggest hit of the holiday season, it is still nice to see Freddie Prinze Jr. returning to his roots.
