Frank Grillo And Ron Perlman Joining DC’s Most Anticipated New Project?
Ron Perlman and Frank Grillo are rumored to be in Creature Commandos together, and the pair were spotted at the premiere of Shazam: Fury of the Gods, increasing speculation they've joined the new DCU.
James Gunn and Peter Safran shook up the comic book movie world when they announced their new plan to reboot and bring the DC franchise into better competition with their Marvel rivals. By canning Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson in favor of a big reset and announcing well-known and unknown new projects, the pair are on a path to either right the ship or continue its descent to the box office and critical floor. One of the surprising projects, Creature Commandos, has had a lot of people scratching their heads, but according to Comic Book, it may have gotten its first stars in Ron Perlman and Frank Grillo.
According to the report, the two actors haven’t confirmed that they will appear in the project, per se, but the implications are heavy. The two of them were spotted at the premiere of another DC film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and since they are not attached to any other DC project, the assumption is that they are there for the future. With Ron Perlman favored by many fans to be the go-to for Frankenstien and Frank Grillo teasing involvement with the project long ago, this feels like all but the confirmation we need.
Creature Commandos is another team of superheroes to add to the list of the Justice League, the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Suicide Squad. And just like the others, it can be extremely successful at the box office if it is done well, with characters that the casual fan outside of comics can recognize, like a vampire, a werewolf, and Frankenstien’s monster. In that way, they may feel a little closer to the likes of The League of Extraordinary Gentleman; let’s hope for everyone’s sake it does better than the Sean Connery outing.
Ron Perlman and Frank Grillo aren’t new to the comic book world of adaptations either, with the former bringing to life Hellboy in two films. His original outing was Guillermo del Toro‘s contribution to the comic book genre by making the films visually beautiful, even if the scripts were less than stunning. The character was rebooted later with Stranger Things actor David Harbour in the lead but fell flat.
Frank Grillo made his comic book contribution (where else) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared in the second Captain America solo outing, Captain America: Winter Soldier as a secondary villain behind Sebastian Stan’s resurrected Bucky Barnes. He appeared again in Captain America: Civil War as the terrorist Crossbones, in an unfortunately brief and underwhelming appearance.
While there are no confirmed statements that tell us we can go ahead and get our hopes up, Ron Pearlman and Frank Grillo showing up at the premiere of Shazam! Fury of the Gods is enough circumstantial evidence to get our brains working. And since James Gunn has said that all animated films, series, games, and movies are intertwined, and the same actors will portray the characters across all mediums, we can expect to see a lot more of the two.
